HP Retakes Lead in U.S. Server Shipments, Repeats as No. 1 Worldwide

PALO ALTO, Calif., Oct. 31, 2003

HP (NYSE:HPQ) solidified its position as the leading global server vendor with 29.7 percent of total unit shipments worldwide, according to preliminary results for the third calendar quarter of 2003 released today by analyst research firm Gartner Dataquest.(1)

Highlights of the Gartner report show growth across the board for HP:

  • HP re-gained the top U.S. position with 26.6 percent of total U.S. server shipments. HP grew U.S. shipments faster than the market, with 9.9 percent sequential growth and 28.3 percent growth year-over-year.
  • HP's global server leadership was fueled by market-beating sequential growth (8.1 percent) and year-over-year growth (21.2 percent) worldwide for all servers.
  • In the fast-growing Industry Architecture (IA) server market, HP again outsold the competition with its popular industry-standard HP ProLiant server line. For the calendar quarter, HP posted significant sequential growth (7.8 percent) and year-over-year growth (21.6 percent) for unit shipments of IA servers worldwide.

"HP is driving server market growth in the U.S. and the world through technology innovation and industry leadership in the fastest growing market segments, including blade servers, SMB, Itanium and Linux," said Brad Anderson, senior vice president and general manager, Industry Standard Servers, HP. "With nearly one out of every three servers shipped last quarter, HP sold more servers than any company worldwide and continues to deliver innovative products, aggressive pricing, value-added support and services based on open, industry-standard platforms."

From industry-standard HP ProLiant and Integrity servers, to high-end Superdome and NonStop systems, HP offers enterprise customers the broadest server portfolio in the industry, along with the industry's leading storage and management solutions. HP will soon be expanding its server portfolio to include new industry-standard HP ProLiant and Integrity servers.
