HP Re-takes No. 1 Market Share in Global PC Industry New Report From Major Research Firm Shows HP Growing for Second Straight Quarter, Faster Than Market PALO ALTO, Calif., Jan. 16, 2003PALO ALTO, Calif., Jan. 16, 2003 -- Based on new third-party market share data released today, HP (NYSE:HPQ) re-claimed the No. 1 position in global PC markets during the fourth calendar quarter of 2002, marking the second consecutive quarter the company has recorded positive growth and grown faster than the overall PC industry. The report reflects HP's momentum in a fourth quarter that began only five months after completing its merger with Compaq Computer Corporation, providing another market indicator that HP continues to successfully execute its post-merger plan. Preliminary results released Thursday by IDC show that HP has moved back into the No. 1 spot over Dell in worldwide market share. The reports also show that HP sustained positive quarter-to-quarter growth across all regions and in all major categories, reinforcing the strength of HP's worldwide position and market momentum. According to IDC data, HP grew at 20.8 percent worldwide in total PC shipments quarter over quarter and 17.9 percent in the United States. "These results reflect the impact of HP's business moves, as we deliver innovative new products, neutralize Dell's price advantage and make major supply chain improvements that help HP deliver better value to our customers," said Jim McDonnell, vice president of marketing, HP Personal Systems Group. "Our customers expect high innovation and high value, and we're delivering." During the fourth quarter, HP introduced several new products including the Compaq Tablet PC, the HP Media Center PC, two new iPAQ Pocket PCs, as well as several aggressively priced notebook and desktop PC offerings. In addition, the company introduced its breakthrough Digital Media Receiver product at last week's Consumer Electronics Show, creating new ways for consumers to interact with their digital content across their PCs, TVs and stereo systems. The inexpensive HP Digital Media Receiver uses wired or wireless technology to play digital music and view photo libraries stored on PCs from TVs and stereo systems, regardless of the rooms where the equipment is stored. About HP HP is a leading global provider of products, technologies, solutions and services to consumers and businesses. The company's offerings span IT infrastructure, personal computing and access devices, global services and imaging and printing.
