Compaq Struts Its Stuff With Up & Running Race
Second Harvest Food Bank to Receive All Race Proceeds CUPERTINO, CA, April 16, 2002Over 3,000 athletes will be gearing up at the Compaq Up & Running start line on Sunday, April 21, for the race's 18th annual running. The Compaq-owned race is one of the most anticipated events on the Silicon Valley running scene and is part of the USA Track & Field Pacific Coast Association 10K Championship race circuit. Benefiting the Second Harvest Food Bank, whose goal is to fight hunger in the Bay Area, Compaq Up & Running is the only area running event in which 100 percent of the proceeds are donated to charity. Last year, Compaq raised more than $60,000 for Second Harvest Food Bank, with over 2,500 race participants. "Each year we are proud to bring Compaq Up & Running to the Bay Area community. It is always an enjoyable event for families, friends, our employees and elite and weekend athletesall in the name of charity," said Pauline Nist, vice president and general manager of Compaq's NonStop Division. "Serving the communities in which our employees live and work is a priority for us at Compaq. We are honored to be able to support the extraordinary efforts of the Second Harvest Food Bank each year." "At a time when clients of the food bank are faced with increasing living costs, having a partner like Compaq is extremely beneficial to us," said Dave Sandretto, executive director, Second Harvest Food Bank. "Compaq's contributions enable us to continue providing and improving programs for our clients at a time when our services are in great demand." The Compaq Up & Running Race will begin at 9:00 a.m. at Compaq's Silicon Valley campus at 19333 Vallco Parkway, Cupertino. Race-day registration begins at 7 a.m., with the pre-race warm-up starting at 8:45 a.m. The race is not only a draw for serious runners, but it's also a great event for recreational runners, families, and spectators. It features a 10K and 2-mile, run/walk for adults, a 1-mile fun run for children ages 6 through 12, and a popular Trike & Trot race for kids 6 and under. Family expo activities are open to kids of all ages from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. More than 2,500 runners, walkers, spectators, city officials, and volunteers are expected to enjoy race day at Compaq. All registered race participants will receive an event T-shirt and continental breakfast.
