Compaq Presents Ohio Governor With Digital State Survey Award

State Scores in Top 10 in Overall Rankings of eGov Services to Citizens

HOUSTON, April 2, 2002

Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ), exclusive sponsor of the 2001 Digital State Survey, today presented the governor of Ohio, Bob Taft, with the Digital State Survey Award for scoring ninth in the nation for its use of digital technologies to provide services to citizens. Ohio tied with Michigan in this overall ninth place ranking, both scoring 82.5 out of 100. In addition, Ohio placed fifth in two categories: Law Enforcement and the Courts, and Management and Administration.

"Ohio went from not even being listed among the top 25 last year, to number nine this year," said Jim Weynand, vice president of government and education markets at Compaq. "This tremendous achievement is the direct result of the governor's vision and leadership, and we applaud his efforts."

The annual survey, conducted by the Progress & Freedom Foundation and the Center for Digital Government, documents progress made by states in adopting digital technologies to improve cost efficiencies, and in the amount and quality of information available to the public.

The 50-state survey examines technology in eight categories: electronic commerce and business regulation; taxation and revenue; social services; law enforcement and the courts; digital democracy; management and administration; education; GIS and transportation. The survey received an average response rate of 96 percent.

State by State Results

Illinois and Kansas tied for top honors in the 2001 survey, with a score of 91.8. They are followed, in order, by Washington, Maryland, Arizona, Maine, New Jersey, Utah, Ohio and Michigan.
