Compaq and Lucent Technologies Join Forces to Speed Availability of High-Speed Mobile Data Solutions for Businesses

HOUSTON, TX and MURRAY HILL, NJ, March 11, 2002

Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) and Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) today announced a relationship that will accelerate the availability of wireless capabilities for devices such as the Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC and Compaq Evo notebooks. This will allow enterprise customers to take advantage of the increased speed and capacity of third-generation (3G) wireless networks, providing remote workers and traveling employees with secure, quick and easy access to corporate applications from any location.

Under the agreement, the two companies will collaborate to ensure compatibility of Compaq's iPAQ Pocket PC and Evo notebook PC (with Compaq 1xEV-DO MultiPort Module) with Lucent's CDMA2000™ and universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) wireless network equipment to provide mobile professionals with high-speed mobile data solutions such as wireless Web browsing, mobile e-mail and video streaming at speeds of up to 2.4 Megabits per second (Mbps). The companies will also work together on product development and testing of CDMA2000 1X, CDMA2000 1xEV-DO and UMTS as well as joint-marketing activities and technical support of lab and field tests.

This collaboration between Compaq and Lucent is an important step to accelerate the introduction of high-speed data solutions for mobile operators worldwide and underscores both companies' commitment to delivering 3G wireless solutions for businesses.

"Lucent is helping 3G mobile operators capitalize on the valuable emerging market for high-speed mobile data services that enable secure communications between enterprise data networks and mobile users," said John Marinho, vice president of offer management, Lucent Technologies Mobility Solutions Group. "We are pleased to work with Compaq, a recognized leader in the enterprise space, to help our customers deliver secure high-speed mobile access to business-critical applications."

"Compaq is focused on providing wireless enterprise solutions to our customers using innovative access devices such as the iPAQ Pocket PC and Evo notebook with MultiPort to deliver the high-speed data capabilities enabled by 3G networks," said Jerry Meerkatz, vice president of Enterprise Mobility Solutions, Compaq Computer Corp. "We are pleased to work with Lucent to help our customers enhance the productivity of their mobile workforce."

Lucent and Compaq will be demonstrating live high-speed 3G data transmissions using Lucent CDMA2000 1xEV-DO equipment and Compaq's Evo N600C Notebook with the Compaq 1xEV-DO MultiPort Module at Lucent's booth (number 2939) at the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association Wireless 2002 show, taking place March 18-20 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla.
