Compaq Enables End-to-End Wireless Solutions to Microsoft Mobile Information Server

Compaq Solutions Bring Greater ROI to Microsoft Exchange Users

HOUSTON, February 20, 2002

Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) today announced new access and infrastructure solutions for Microsoft Mobile Information Server 2002 (MIS) that will provide Compaq customers with wireless access to their Microsoft Exchange 2000 messaging on a variety of cellular and WiFi wireless networks, increasing productivity of global workforces. Utilizing the Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC with MIS, customers will now be able to access their inbox, calendar, and contacts from their corporate Compaq ProLiant servers running Exchange 2000 from anywhere, at anytime.

Compaq continues to optimize its end-to-end solutions for both Microsoft wireless and messaging platforms, building on the largest installed base of Microsoft Exchange worldwide running on industry-standard Compaq ProLiant servers, the popularity of the Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC for wireless information access, and the industry's most experienced services organization for messaging and collaboration.

Today, Compaq is providing enterprise customers with true mobile access and management of time-critical information, such as e-mail, meeting notifications, and the ability to view Microsoft Word and Excel attachments. New offerings from Compaq announced today include Compaq packaged solutions for MIS, new MIS installation and start-up services from Compaq Global Services, and Compaq Managed Mobility solutions for MIS.

"Compaq is the only solutions provider with all the resources needed to wirelessly mobilize an enterprise for maximum business benefit," said Jerry Meerkatz, vice president and general manager, Compaq Enterprise Mobility Solutions Group. "By combining MIS software with the iPAQ Pocket PC and Compaq ProLiant servers—brought together by Compaq Global Services—we're providing customers with faster access to their data and e-mail in Exchange environments, which ultimately means a higher return on their investments."

Telefonica Moviles has successfully completed a pilot program with Compaq and Microsoft solutions for MIS and will begin offering service to its customers in February 2002. Compaq Global Services will provide MIS hosting and support and will install MIS software for Telefonica customers.

"Working with Compaq Global Services and Microsoft, we are deploying an enhanced enterprise wireless communication service for our mobile enterprise customers that will deliver the wireless services they need to increase productivity and competitiveness," said Jose Maria Soler, partnership director, Telefonica Moviles. "Our customers will be able to feel confident about addressing crucial business needs from wherever they are in the world."

"Microsoft's goal is to take mobility mainstream and make it more easy to deploy. The combination of Compaq's Global Services and solutions and Microsoft's Mobile Information Server will provide corporate IT managers with the tools required to easily implement a worldwide mobile solution for end users," said Paul Flessner, senior vice president of the Microsoft® .NET Enterprise Server Division at Microsoft Corp.

New Compaq Solutions for Wireless Access

Compaq has designed and pre-tested end-to-end mobile e-mail and personal information management (PIM) solution packages for MIS 2002 enterprise customers. Packages available can include Compaq iPAQ Pocket PCs, industry-standard Compaq ProLiant servers, PCMCIA Cellular and WiFi cards, CDPD Airtime Services, MIS 2002 Enterprise Editions and other required software, and MIS 2002 installation and start-up services from Compaq Global Services. Customers deploying these solutions will have true mobile access to their Microsoft Exchange 2000 inbox, calendar, and contacts.

In addition to Compaq Lifecycle Services for Mobile Messaging, customers wishing to deploy MIS into their enterprise can also purchase new Compaq CarePaq installation and start-up services for MIS 2002—providing installation and configuration of a single server. New Compaq Managed Mobility solutions for MIS provide customized, end-to-end wireless solutions based on Microsoft Exchange—completely managed by Compaq. Compaq integrates, manages and supports MIS solutions—from hosting the ProLiant servers and iPAQ Pocket PCs, to coordinating with customers' wireless carriers. Compaq Managed Mobility solutions also enable customers to scale their service levels up or down, depending on business requirements.
