Compaq Appoints Robert E. Tarjan Corporate Fellow of Research, Development

HOUSTON, February 4, 2002

Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) today named Dr. Robert E. Tarjan to the position of corporate fellow for Compaq's research and development team. Tarjan will report to Shane Robison, senior vice president and chief technology officer for Compaq. Tarjan is a pioneer in computer science, internationally known for his expertise in the design and analysis of computer algorithms and data structures.

"Bob brings to Compaq a wealth of experience in technological research and development. He will play a key role in providing strategic direction for Compaq's research efforts," said Robison. "His leadership will help us further capitalize on our investment in R&D, taking Compaq well into the next generation of the Internet."

For the past 17 years, Tarjan has been the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor of Computer Science at Princeton University, a position he will retain. Previously, Tarjan was chief scientist of InterTrust Technologies, as well as a senior research fellow in InterTrust's STAR Lab. He has held academic positions at New York University, Stanford University, the University of California at Berkeley, and Cornell University; and industrial research positions at the NEC Research Institute and Bell Laboratories.

Among his many honors, Tarjan received the first Nevanlinna Prize in Information Science in 1983 from the International Mathematical Union and the Turing Award in 1986 from the Association for Computing Machinery—the latter is regarded as computer science's Nobel Prize.

Tarjan received his bachelor's degree in mathematics from the California Institute of Technology in 1969, and his master's degree and Ph.D. in computer science from Stanford University in 1971 and 1972.
