HP Wins CDMA Industry Award for Emergency 911 Location Solution

PALO ALTO, Calif., July 10, 2002

HP (NYSE: HPQ) today announced that it has received a major industry award for its emergency 911 location solution deployed by Sprint on its all-digital, all-PCS network in the state of Rhode Island.

The CDMA Development Group selected Sprint and HP, along with HP technology partners SignalSoft Corp. and SnapTrack, Inc., to receive the 2002 Innovative Solutions award. Presented at the 3G World Congress in Hong Kong, the award specifically recognizes the companies for the deployment of the first handset-based E911 Phase II service in the United States.

The Phase II E911 mandate requires wireless carriers to be able to locate wireless 911 callers within 50 meters 65 percent of the time and within 150 meters 95 percent of the time using a handset-based solution or within 100 meters using a network-based solution.

HP provided Sprint with its complete HP Discovery Location Solution, which integrates mobile positioning software from SignalSoft and position determining technology from HP and SnapTrack onto a single IN Service Control Point platform. The solution runs on HP's carrier-grade NonStop server, which provides the fault tolerant performance carriers need for an emergency 911 service. HP Services worked closely with Sprint to successfully integrate the Discovery Location Solution into the Sprint all-digital, all-PCS network in Rhode Island.

"HP helped Sprint lead the market in the delivery of Phase II wireless 911 services," said Sebastiano Tevarotto, vice president and general manager, HP Network and Service Provider Business Unit. "Sprint and HP have a track record of success, and this award underscores how our two companies continue to cooperate to reduce complexity -- and accelerate time-to-market."
