Walled Lake Schools, Compaq, and TekInsight Give 5th and 6th Graders Unprecedented Access to Technology

CHICAGO, IL and IRVINE, CA, August 22, 2001

Working with Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) and TekInsight.com (NASDAQ: TEKS, TEKSP, TEKSW), the Walled Lake School District in Michigan will expand its technology initiative and give its 400 fifth and sixth grade students access to Compaq laptops and wireless labs. Walled Lake is Michigan's first K-12 public school district to participate in Microsoft's Anytime Anywhere Learning—a program with the same structure as many colleges and universities.

Under a five-year lease contract, Compaq will provide Walled Lake Schools with end-to-end solutions, including laptops and wireless networking. TekInsight, Compaq's reseller partner, will provide the school district with desktop and laptop deployment as well as management services including asset management and technical support.

"The goal of the program is to help children further their learning by using technology productively and efficiently in relationship to the curriculum," stated Dr. William Hamilton, assistant superintendent for curriculum in the Walled Lake School District. "By delivering simple, innovative access solutions and delivering the highest value, Compaq and TekInsight enable us to continue to expand upon our program."

Walled Lake Schools, located in southeast Michigan, encompasses 21 schools and serves over 14,500 students. The hardware and services provided by Compaq and TekInsight will enable the school district to reduce desktop procurement and support costs by 20 percent, attain a 3:1 student-to-computer ratio, and provide teachers and students access to the latest technology over the five-year lifespan of the contract.

Walled Lake initiated the Anytime Anywhere Learning program three years ago. To date, the program serves approximately 1,400 students in the fifth through the eighth grades in the Walled Lake school district. Within five years, Walled Lake hopes that the majority of its students will be equipped with laptops. By partnering with Compaq and TekInsight, the school district has been able to expand the number of laptops it makes available to students for general use. In addition, Compaq will provide a Web site for faculty and parents to receive additional computers at discounted rates.

"Technology by itself cannot make enough of a difference. Enabling people to use technology to its fullest potential makes every difference," said Jim Weynand, vice president Government Education Markets for Compaq. "Compaq's breadth and scope of IT experience enables us to deliver a total solution for students, faculty and parents as well as build an Internet infrastructure inside the classroom."

Redefining Internet access is a key component of Walled Lake's vision for Anytime Anywhere Learning. Walled Lake will employ wireless technology to further extend its students' access to information. By this fall, every middle school and high school in the Walled Lake school district will be wirelessly networked.

"Technology is a critical component in the education of today's youth. Having reliable computer resources available at school helps students develop the skills necessary to excel in today's technologically-driven society," stated Steve Ross, TekInsight's chief executive officer. "By partnering with TekInsight and Compaq, Walled Lake Schools is ensuring their technical infrastructure is available to students, faculty and administration when it is most needed."
