Compaq Powers the Wireless "Newsroom of the Future" at the National Association of Black Journalists Convention ORLANDO, August 22, 2001 Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) and the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) today announced that Compaq is the primary technology sponsor for the 26th Annual NABJ Convention being held at the Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel, August 21-26. As part of its sponsorship, Compaq will supply a wireless computing network that NABJ student journalists and broadcasters will use to produce daily convention coverage and stories for NABJ Convention Online, the NABJ Monitor, NABJ TV and Next Generation Radio. The wireless network, being set up by Compaq and its technology partner, Integrated Information Systems (NASDAQ: IISX) (IIS), will include Compaq servers, desktop and notebook PCs, printers, scanners and the ever-popular iPAQ™ Pocket PC. "Embracing technology is a centerpiece initiative for the NABJ," said William W. Sutton Jr., president of the Board of Directors for NABJ, the oldest and largest media-related organization for people of color in the world. "Compaq's involvement expands our understanding of how to use technology tools more effectively. This increases our organization's value to our members and ensures we keep up with the latest technology applications available for our industry." For example, the iPAQ Pocket PC is the most powerful handheld computing tool on the market and also the most popular, as evidenced by the 62 percent growth in units shipped during second quarter 2001 as compared to the previous quarter.(1) This innovative device will allow the student journalists to save precious time in the news gathering and production process because of the device's ability to record sound, access and transmit data over the Internet, manipulate word processing and spreadsheet data, and perform other personal organizer functions. "To the degree reporters can use innovative technology like the iPAQ Pocket PC to gather and disseminate high-quality, relevant information faster and more efficiently holds great promise for journalists," said Peter Blackmore, Compaq's executive vice president for Sales and Services. "Compaq's sponsorship is helping put NABJ's membership at the leading edge of wireless technology in a working newsroom setting." The NABJ Convention represents one of the first applications of Compaq's iPAQ Pocket PC in a newsroom setting. However, during the recent Silicon Summit II technology symposium earlier this year about the wireless future, a prominent news anchorman from a major national television network called the device "the anchorman's dream!" Other industries citing innovative uses for the device include health care, sports and entertainment, financial services, enterprise solutions, emergency management, education, defense, sales and marketing and special events. As an additional part of the sponsorship, Compaq and IIS will also supply PCs for a "Cyber Café" where conference attendees can check and send e-mail, as well as a wireless computer learning lab for interested NABJ members and a technology storefront to sell specially priced iPAQ Pocket PCs and other Compaq equipment. "Disney World's reputation for innovation provides an ideal setting for us to demonstrate cutting-edge technology solutions," said Jim Garvey, chairman, CEO and president of IIS. "We are pleased to join Compaq at the NABJ convention to demonstrate how wirelessly connected newsrooms can help today's professional journalists work faster and more efficiently in a highly competitive, deadline driven environment."
