Compaq CEO Michael Capellas Accepts Honorary Degree from Drexel University

PHILADELPHIA, June 9, 2001

Michael Capellas, chairman and CEO of Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ), today accepted a degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa, at Drexel University's 114th Commencement.

"There is great synergy between Drexel University and Compaq Computer Corporation in acknowledging the strategic importance of technology and the role it will play in shaping our world in the future," said Capellas. "Drexel has always positioned technology as an integral asset to education and a key to the success of its graduates."

In the university's first and largest commencement of the day, Capellas spoke to nearly 1,100 graduates of the Bennett S. Lebow College of Business and the College of Information Science and Technology. "Drexel was one of the first universities to require all entering students to have personal access to computers," Capellas said. "Today, Drexel is one of the most wired campuses in the country. It's that kind of commitment that is needed if we are to bridge the Digital Divide and ensure that everyone has access to the richness of the Internet and can participate in the interconnected world of tomorrow."

As a leading expert in information technology and supply chain management, Capellas's primary focus is Compaq's strategy to redefine Internet access, deliver business-critical Internet solutions and ensure customer success through global partnerships and services. Compaq is executing that strategy by providing customers with innovative products, integrated into solutions and delivered globally.

Joining Compaq in 1998 as the company's chief information officer, Capellas planned and implemented the transformation of the company's information systems to meet the demands of the Internet era.
