Compaq and Icewrx Team Up to Deliver Wireless Internet Access at STAPLES Center

LOS ANGELES, June 6, 2001

In the near future, sports fans at STAPLES Center will be able to view streaming video, the latest scores, team statistics, and check traffic conditions for the ride home, in addition to ordering food, drinks and merchandise on Compaq iPAQ™ Pocket PCs.

In a test launch beginning here today, Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) is teaming up with Icewrx Inc. to incorporate hot-selling, award-winning iPAQ Pocket PCs with wireless LAN connections at STAPLES Center. Compaq iPAQ Pocket PCs will be distributed as part of the test launch during the first game of the NBA Championships, with a full launch at STAPLES Center anticipated in the fall. Ultimately, spectators, the media and arena staff can use the popular handheld devices for a variety of applications.

"We are always looking to enhance the guest experience for our fans, and believe this program will dramatically change the way sports spectators can access information and enrich the sporting experience," said Vicki Kaplan, chief technical officer for STAPLES Center.

Compaq's iPAQ Pocket PCs will deliver state-of-the-art technology that enables sports fans with real-time wireless and mobile capabilities access to essential sporting information and a wide range of communication functions—including Internet access and the ability to monitor the game from more than just the sidelines. Spectators can examine different views of the basketball court, and in the future, will be able to even download traffic information to determine the best route home after the game.

"The ability for people to receive rich content, anywhere and anytime, is a significant milestone in the development of wireless solutions," said Icewrx President and CEO Michael Kahn. "We believe that providing content to people when and where they need it will change the way we live and work."

Icewrx is looking to expand the wireless technology to other sports, hotels and entertainment venues around the county, Kahn added.

"This ambitious end-to-end solution dramatically changes the way we can access and use information, and showcases the versatility and breadth of Compaq products and services," said Leigh Morrison, vice president of enterprise sales for Compaq's west region, headquartered in El Segundo.

The iPAQ Pocket PC devices are connected to Compaq ProLiant servers via a wireless LAN, however, the devices can work both online and offline and information is distributed through the wireless LAN.
