Compaq Computer Corporation, Houston-Area Businesses Support the Seventh Annual Sembradores de Amistad Educational Foundation Golf Tournament

HOUSTON, May 18, 2001

The Sembradores de Amistad Educational Foundation, Inc., will hold its eighth annual Compaq-Sembradores de Amistad Golf Tournament May 21 at Longwood Golf Club. In addition to Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ), twenty other area private sector businesses and organizations are supporting this year's event.

Now in its 37th year, the Sembradores Foundation has provided scholarships to hundreds of students, many of whom are now Houston-area business leaders.

Proceeds from the tournament will benefit Sembradores de Amistad Educational Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit volunteer organization that provides college scholarships for Houston-area high school seniors. This tournament is one of the major fund-raisers for The Sembradores de Amistad Educational Foundation, Inc., a private, nonprofit organization that provides scholarships and financial aid to Houston-area high school graduates and continuing college students.

"Compaq is proud to be a sponsor of the Sembradores de Amistad Golf Tournament," said Michael Capellas, Compaq chairman and chief executive officer. "Proceeds from this tournament will help to fund the more than $70,000 in scholarships that will be awarded this year to deserving students whose ability to attend institutions of higher education is limited by lack of financial resources."

With its "Partners in Education" program, the Foundation is supported by and works with civic and business institutions like Compaq to provide college funds for young people with financial needs. Members of the Sembradores Foundation personally interview the scholarship candidates and serve as mentors to the award recipients. The scholarships will be presented at this year's banquet being held at Rice University. The annual Christmas Posada fund-raiser in December culminates the year by honoring the "Partners in Education."
