Compaq First to Offer AMD Athlon 4 Processors at Speeds up to 1GHz in Presario Notebooks

HOUSTON, May 16, 2001

Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) once again leads the industry by being first to offer U.S. home and small office customers the AMD Athlon 4®processor in its enhanced new Presario 1200 series notebook PCs. The Presario 1200 is available today with options to include the fastest clock speed in a mobile processor available, the 1GHz Athlon 4, at prices starting as low as $1,599 (1).

"The new Presario 1200 series powered by mobile Athlon 4 processors delivers cutting-edge performance at unprecedented prices for mobile professionals wanting the power today for tomorrow's mobile computing requirements," said Kevin Frost, Compaq vice president, Mobile Products, Access Business Group.

Compaq is also offering small businesses a very compelling wireless Internet experience by bundling the recently announced high speed wireless Internet service—iPAQnet Mobile Internet on Ricochet—as an additional option for the Presario 1200. "Compaq is leading the wireless Internet revolution by offering small business customers the complete solution—wireless Internet services combined with our powerful new Presario 1200 notebook," said Frost. "We believe wireless Internet access is a natural evolution of the notebook PC and Compaq is leading the way in making the Internet truly pervasive and always accessible to our customers."

The new Presario 1200 series offers consumers and small offices both design and affordability, incorporating convenient features such as a built-in 10/100 Ethernet port, which enables connecting directly to a network or high-speed Internet access service. The new Presario 1200 also features battery-extending AMD PowerNow! Technology which dynamically optimizes the notebook for performance or battery life. System configurations include a choice of a 13.3" XGA or 14.1" XGA display, up to a 20GB UltraDMA hard drive, DVD or CD-RW drive, a 56K V.90 modem and up to 320MB of 133 MHz memory.
