Compaq and Inktomi Sign Premier Design Partner Agreement to Build Content-Networking Server Appliances

HOUSTON and FOSTER CITY, CA, March 21, 2001

Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) and Inktomi Corp. (NASDAQ: INKT), today announced that they have signed a formal agreement by which Compaq becomes Inktomi's Premier Design Partner for the development of integrated content networking platforms. The agreement is the first joint initiative with Inktomi and a systems vendor to develop content-networking server appliances embedding Inktomi's leading caching and media distribution software platforms. The companies will integrate Compaq TaskSmart™ C-Series content acceleration appliances with Inktomi® Traffic Server® network caching software and Inktomi® MediaBridge™ media distribution software. Under terms of the agreement, Compaq and Inktomi will collaborate on a range of engineering and marketing programs. Compaq plans to introduce the first of its new TaskSmart C-Series server appliances based on Inktomi Traffic Server engine in the second quarter of 2001.

"Today, Compaq and Inktomi are leading the industry by addressing customers' needs for solutions at the edge of the network and taking content acceleration to the next level with unprecedented intelligence and performance," said Mary McDowell, senior vice president and general manager, Compaq Industry Standard Server Group. "Our shared vision of developing content-aware platforms based on TaskSmart server appliances and Inktomi Internet infrastructure software will dramatically speed end-to-end delivery of content across the Internet."

"Inktomi's relationship with Compaq promises to speed the development of optimized appliances for content and media acceleration that easily integrate into existing networks," said David Peterschmidt, president and chief executive officer at Inktomi. "The Compaq TaskSmart appliance architecture, coupled with Inktomi's content networking software, will provide companies with a rapidly deployable solution that improves the flow of content across networks and delivers higher quality of service through content-aware delivery."

Pushing the Boundaries of Content Networking

Traditional network acceleration systems focus on low-level addressing information to determine data flows and paths. Based on current TaskSmart C-series offerings, Compaq and Inktomi will develop intelligent content-aware appliance solutions designed to optimize the delivery of streaming media and other file types, which could include e-mail and customer orders. This method provides a much higher quality of service by allowing smart and dynamic prioritization of content delivery through the network. Through the co-development program, new TaskSmart server appliances will be developed using Inktomi's next-generation content networking software to enable enterprises and service providers to easily deploy transparent content-aware networks on top of existing infrastructure hardware, further optimizing bandwidth.

The TaskSmart C-Series Appliance Delivers New Levels of Performance and Functionality

Designed to increase network efficiency, the performance-optimized Compaq TaskSmart C-Series content acceleration appliances deliver the breakthrough economics of industry standards for caching frequently requested information at the edge of the network. By adding Inktomi Traffic Server and Inktomi® Traffic Server™ Media-IXT™ software to the TaskSmart C-Series appliances in the second quarter, and next-generation Internet Infrastructure software later this year, Compaq will enable e-business customers to keep critical information closer to end users for faster, more efficient content delivery and optimized network bandwidth resources.
