HP and Samsung SDS Sign Licensing Agreement for OpenMail Software

Agreement Establishes Path for Upgrades and New Features for Highly Successful e-Mail Server Technology

PALO ALTO, Calif., and SEOUL, South Korea, Nov. 13, 2001

Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HWP) and Samsung SDS have signed a licensing agreement allowing SDS to develop, enhance and sell messaging solutions built on HP's OpenMail e-mail server software.

SDS plans to develop products with new features providing existing OpenMail software users an ideal path for upgrades. The first release of SDS's messaging server will be compatible with OpenMail 7.0 and all its latest features while also adding new enhancements. The new server is expected to ship in the first half of 2002. A future version, also planned for 2002, will include telephone access to e-mail -- what is known as unified messaging.

Based on OpenMail software's highly reliable, secure and stable base, the new SDS messaging solution, Samsung Contact, will incorporate the latest technology developed both internally and by partners. SDS's goal is for the new solution to become the leading unified communication product on the market.

"We are delighted to be able to extend our relationship with Samsung SDS, a software partner of many years," said Bill Russell, vice president, HP Software and Solutions Organization. "HP will continue to focus its software efforts on building world-class middleware, while SDS will focus on end-user solutions developed using HP's middleware."

Initially released in 1990, OpenMail software has been used by more than 60 percent of Fortune 1000 companies. As the only e-mail server apart from Microsoft® Exchange to support a wide range of important Microsoft Outlook features, OpenMail software provides a cost-sensitive enterprise solution allowing deployment of thousands or even millions of users on a single server. SDS has used OpenMail software as the basis of its own internal communication system for five years, providing reliable communications across the company's 230,000 users.

"We believe that an advanced and reliable communications package is going to be essential to provide the advanced communication of the always-on mobile Internet," said Unsik Kang, vice president, Samsung SDS e-Solution Division. "Smart messaging will also be essential as a way of linking our various user applications."

SDS will develop its new messaging application using a team of experts drawn from Europe, the United States, Korea and China. Local sales and support will be delivered in all major countries through specialized staff trained in the new applications.

SDS's messaging solutions will complement other SDS software in the market, such as the ACUBE Enterprise Knowledge portal and the FormXpress workflow solution, which HP intends to co-market and co-sell under a separate reseller agreement. In addition, SDS intends to use the HP Netaction middleware suite of products to develop applications.

SDS also has developed two novel Web- and Windows®-based e-mail clients (previously known as Gemini), which will be released in the first quarter of 2002. These clients can be used stand-alone, with other e-mail solutions or with the new SDS messaging server. In addition to e-mail features, the clients are scheduled to include calendar and personal task management functionality.
