HP Brings Wireless Print Server to Macintosh Market

Classrooms, Small Offices and Families to Benefit from Flexible Printing Capabilities

PALO ALTO, Calif., April 30, 2001

Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HWP) today unveiled a high-bandwidth, wireless printing device ideal for customers who want to share a single printer and eliminate the need for connecting wires. With the HP Wireless Print Server WP100, a printer can be located anywhere in a home or office within 100 feet of Macintosh computers enabled with Apple's AirPort technology without the need for any physical connection.

Whether small offices are adding new users to a network or moving to a new location, using the HP print server can smooth the transition and help limit the costs associated with such changes. Also ideal for mobile classroom applications, the HP Wireless Print Server WP100 allows multiple students to share a specified HP inkjet printer, increasing the efficient use of classroom resources.

"As computing goes wireless, HP continues to explore a number of technologies that enable wireless devices to maximize productivity and improve efficiency," said Karl Schwenkmeyer, marketing manager, HP Imaging and Printing Systems. "As one of the first to market with an IEEE 802.11b-compliant print server, HP is giving customers the ability to choose wireless options that best serve their needs."

Based on IEEE 802.11b, the predominant technology standard used to achieve mobility in Macintosh environments, the HP Wireless Print Server WP100 brings wireless printer sharing to a broad segment of Macintosh users. With transmission speeds of up to 11 Mbps, the print server allows users to experience the speed and functionality similar to a traditional LAN, but without the nuisance often associated with cumbersome wiring.

The HP Wireless Print Server WP100 uses AirPort wireless technology, which is used widely throughout the Macintosh community and enables users to send and receive e-mail, navigate the Web and exchange files without the hassle and expense of cables and additional phone lines. The HP print server extends the AirPort technology by allowing multiple users to share a single printer via 802.11b, and it is a cost-effective way to extend printing capabilities to multiple users without purchasing additional printing devices.

Pricing and Availability

Compatible with network-capable HP inkjet printers, including the HP Deskjet 900 and HP Deskjet 895C Professional Series printers, the HP Wireless Print Server WP100 will be available through hpshopping.com, the Apple Web store and select Apple dealers for an estimated U.S. street price of $299(1) as a stand-alone accessory. It is also available in bundles with HP printer products.
