HP and Inktomi Announce Alliance to Create Intelligent Caching and Streaming Media Appliances HP Netserver Hardware Integrated with Inktomi Software to Accelerate e-Business and Optimize Performance PALO ALTO and FOSTER CITY, Calif., Feb. 21, 2001 Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HWP) and Inktomi Corp. (Nasdaq:INKT), developer of scalable Internet infrastructure software, today announced that HP has agreed to build intelligent caching and streaming media appliances using Inktomi's leading network infrastructure software. HP will embed Inktomi® Traffic Server® and Traffic Server Media-IXT™ software into customized HP Netservers to create three new products for edge and server caching and streaming. HP and Inktomi are working together to offer three reliable and scalable HP server appliances -- the HP Web Cache SA 2100, the HP Web Cache SA 2200 and the HP Media Cache Server Appliance SA 2250 - designed to enable caching and fast delivery of rich media content. These caching server appliances are designed to allow service providers and enterprise customers to accelerate e-business and optimize data center performance by maximizing available bandwidth, improving response time and off-loading tasks from critical servers. These products are expected to begin shipping in Q2 2001. " HP aims to work with leading vendors such as Inktomi to create the best appliance solutions for its customers," said Frank Harbist, general manager, HP Server Appliances. " HP has broad caching experience and is pursuing the caching and streaming server appliance market - among the industry's fastest growing segments. This alliance with Inktomi demonstrates HP 's commitment to its customers to deliver the broadest and deepest range of server appliances for an always-on Internet infrastructure." "Inktomi's network infrastructure software platform enables dramatic efficiency and performance benefits for distributed enterprise and service provider networks," said Ted Hally, senior vice president and general manager, Network Products Division at Inktomi. "Inktomi looks forward to working with HP on building intelligent caching appliances and providing core technology for this new appliance initiative." The agreement with Inktomi positions HP to offer the widest range of caching and content distribution solutions incorporating Inktomi software and represents an important milestone in HP 's strategy to become a leader in the server appliance marketplace -- a market that International Data Corporation is projecting to grow to $13 billion by 2004(1). Today's news also highlights the importance of HP 's recent announcement with Intel(2) in the server appliance market. HP and Intel plan to help transition existing Intel customers who wish to adopt the HP and Inktomi caching solution that includes HP 's unparalleled service and support. Over a month ago, HP was named as the first major OEM of Intel's NetStructure appliance server line. Following the announcement, HP and Intel have worked extensively to ensure a smooth transition and develop products that address the needs of both HP and Intel's customers.
