HP OpenView Selected by Defense Department for Mission-critical Messaging System

PALO ALTO, Calif., Jan. 30, 2001

Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE: HWP) today announced that the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) has selected HP OpenView Network Node Manager software as its primary tool to manage network devices on the Defense Message System (DMS). The DOD uses the 10,000-node DMS as its platform for all classified, mission-critical messaging and to support national security efforts during crises.

The Defense Information Systems Agency has licensed and deployed 350 copies of HP OpenView Network Node Manager to manage networks in the majority of the more than 600 DOD locations running DMS.

"The Department of Defense has long been a valued customer of HP OpenView network management products," said Bruce Klein, national federal sales manager, HP Public Sector Organization. "We are honored that our products have been selected to support a messaging system that is vital to the security of the United States."

All of the strategic and tactical forces within the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps use DMS for messaging at the top-secret level and below. DMS is designed to provide secure multimedia messaging and directory services throughout the military. The system will be installed on about 100,000 desktop computers at thousands of DOD sites worldwide.
