HP Files Patent Infringement Complaint with U.S. Federal Agency
PALO ALTO, Calif., Jan. 5, 2001
Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE: HWP) today announced that it has recently lodged a patent infringement complaint with the United States International Trade Commission against Microjet Technology Co., Ltd. of Taiwan; Printer Essentials.com, Inc., of Reno, Nev.; and Price-Less Inkjet Cartridge Company of Port Charlotte, Fla.
According to allegations in the complaint, Microjet, Printer Essentials.com and Price-Less Inkjet Cartridge Company import or sell two different inkjet cartridges, one intended to replace the HP 51626A cartridge and the other to replace the HP 51629A cartridge. The complaint contends these supposed replacement cartridges infringe six HP patents.
HP seeks an order from the U.S. International Trade Commission prohibiting the defendants from importing and selling any infringing inkjet cartridges into the United States.
The U.S. International Trade Commission is a federal agency that provides objective trade expertise to both the legislative and executive branches of government, determines the impact of imports on U.S. industries and directs actions against certain unfair trade practices, such as patent, trademark and copyright infringement.
"HP's substantial investment in the research and development of inkjet printing technology ensures high-quality products for consumers and business," said Vyomesh Joshi, vice president and general manager, HP Imaging and Printing Systems. "We owe it to our customers and shareholders to preserve that investment and promote invention."
