HP Announces Products and Alliances Aimed at Expanding the Power of the Internet

LAS VEGAS, Nov. 13, 2000

Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE: HWP) today announced a series of alliances and products for the mobile, Internet infrastructure, and digital printing and imaging arenas aimed at popularizing and expanding the power of the Internet.

In the mobile area, HP announced collaborations with Nokia, Ericsson and Palm, Inc. to extend Web-based print capabilities to mobile phones and handheld devices. HP plans to demonstrate a wireless printing prototype that connects the Palm V family of handheld computers to HP printers using Bluetooth technology.

Nokia and HP have agreed to develop solutions built on an Internet-based platform that is intended to lead to a proliferation of mobile e-services. An initial application would enable a person using a Nokia mobile phone to direct an HP printer to print a document from the Web. Using solutions based on industry standards such as IR, vCard or Bluetooth, the mobile phones would send the URL of a document to a Web-enabled HP printer.

HP and Ericsson are working together to develop a prototype that demonstrates the capabilities of HP Bluetooth-enabled printers to print objects like phonebooks, calendars and text messages (SMS) from a mobile phone.

HP also unveiled its new wireless mobile PC, the HP OmniBook 500. Weighing just 3.5 lbs. and only an inch thick, the HP OmniBook 500 was designed specifically for highly mobile professionals.

In printing and imaging, HP announced an alliance with Zing Network to develop imaging and printing e-services for Zing.com. The alliance is expected to supply consumers with the tools to design customized greeting cards, calendars and a host of other projects using digital images and photographs.

The company also announced the availability of its new HP PhotoSmart 912 camera with breakthrough "custom photo lab" technology intended to virtually ensure a perfect snapshot every time -- even for the casual photographer.

The HP Color LaserJet 4550 family of printers, successor to the world's best-selling color laser printers, are HP's first generation of intelligent Internet-enabled information appliances. The printers feature HP Chai- embedded VM and other embedded technologies that allow simple remote management from Web browsers and enable colorful Web content and e-service to be delivered directly to the printer from the Internet.

HP has developed a new dual scanning technology that will make scanning faster and easier with higher image quality. This technology uses advanced pixel sensors to achieve high speed and excellent image quality when scanning at lower resolutions. HP will pair the new technology with improved optics, which also improves image quality.

In Internet infrastructure, HP announced that Best Buy has selected HP as its next-generation systems provider to help the company deal with rapid growth. HP also plans to help Best Buy embrace new business models and technologies through a more flexible, high-performance computing infrastructure, based on HP's Superdome high-end server and storage offerings.

HP also announced it will work with Nomad Networks to roll out a wireless Internet infrastructure in Trans World Airlines' Ambassadors ClubŪ locations and select gate areas to increase the productivity and convenience of business travelers by providing wireless Internet connections.

The company also previewed its sleek new concept e-pc, an experimental reinvention of a fully functional desktop PC. With built-in wireless capabilities, this is a reinvented desktop PC for users who want a high-performance, secure machine with a personal design.
