HP LaserJet 8150 Printer Family Defines New Breed of Internet-enabled Appliances

HP's Most Advanced Network Printers and Multifunction Products Feature Technologies that Allow Access to Future E-services and Solutions

PALO ALTO, Calif., Nov. 1, 2000

Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE: HWP) today announced the HP LaserJet 8150 family of printers and multifunction products (MFPs), further advancing the company's printing e-services strategy. The five new printing and imaging appliances feature embedded technologies that will allow access to the growing number of Internet-based services and solutions.

The HP LaserJet 8150 printers and MFPs are the first in the industry to offer an HP ChaiServer Embedded Virtual Machine (EVM). The EVM is a programming environment that enables the printer to execute Java(TM) applications. This means that the HP LaserJet 8150 has the ability to run a wide range of intelligent, Internet-based custom applications. Customers wishing to equip their HP LaserJet 8150 printers with the EVM technology can download the software, free of charge, from http://www.hp.com.

"The LaserJet 8150 family comprises HP's most web-savvy printers," said George Mulhern, general manager for HP's Department LaserJet Printing. "The EVM technology opens a whole new world of web-based services and solutions. For example, an application could be developed that would allow HP printing products to automatically search and print content from the web."

Another feature of the HP LaserJet 8150 printers and MFPs is an embedded web server. Combined with industry-leading HP Web JetAdmin software, the new printers boast a completely scalable offering of remote-management capabilities. For small businesses, the embedded technologies enable remote management from a standard web browser. For large, enterprise environments, the new technologies work seamlessly with Web JetAdmin. The web server and HP Web JetAdmin also enable e-mail alerts, real-time status updates and diagnostics, firmware upgrades, dynamic self-help messages and online consumables management. Like the EVM technology, the embedded web server software is available, free of charge, from HP's website.

With a 250MHz microprocessor and additional memory, HP LaserJet 8150 printers are HP's fastest at 32 pages per minute (ppm). The printers can be upgraded or pre-configured with an HP JetDirect 610N internal print server for 10/100Base TX network connections. The print server offers four times the performance throughput of its predecessor, 2MB of flash memory, and full-featured compatibility with HP WebJet Admin software. The LaserJet 8150 printers were designed to increase productivity and reduce processing time in complex, high-volume printing environments.

The LaserJet 8150 printers also support HP's largest offering of paper-handling solutions. Compatible accessories include high-capacity input trays, multibin mailboxes and sorters, output stapler/stackers and an auto-duplex option for two-sided printing.

The new LaserJet 8150MFP is a fully integrated digital communications appliance. The MFP model includes all printer features as well as a digital copy module that allows customers to copy, scan or digitally send documents. HP's digital-sending technology is a low-cost, convenient alternative to older technologies, such as fax and analog copying. The LaserJet 8150MFP improves productivity by bringing copying and scanning capabilities closer to the desktop. Customers wishing to upgrade their HP LaserJet 8000, 8100 or 8150 printers can purchase an HP LaserJet MFP upgrade kit.
