HP Unveils "100 Cameras Project"

Series of Digital Photos Transforms 100 People from Around the World into Storytellers

PALO ALTO, Calif., Oct. 17, 2000

Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE: HWP) today unveiled the "100 Cameras Project," a series of digital photos taken by 100 people from various walks of life. The series includes photos taken by one of America's best-known chefs, Alice Waters of Chez Panisse. Water's photos, along with photos taken by 99 other photographers, are now on display at www.hp.com/100cameras.

The "100 Cameras Project" underscores the ease, reward and creative possibilities of digital photography. The photos, accompanied by stories written by the photographers themselves, are the result of a program designed by HP. The program provided 100 people from different walks of life with digital cameras, PCs and printers to allow them to create and express themselves through digital images. The participants represented 40 countries from around the world and included a variety of people, from a stay-at-home dad and a world-class snowboarder to an ex-gang member and an 81-year-old Beat Generation poet.

"The beauty of digital images is that it's more accessible to everyone, everywhere. Photographers now have the simple tools to capture, store and manipulate images, and their family and friends are now sharing those images via the Internet," said Maia Ozguc, director, global brand advertising, HP Corporate Brand Communications. "The '100 Cameras Project' Web site allows the emotion and experience captured in these 100 images to be accessible to the world."

Everyday People

Ranging from environmentalists to people celebrating their heritage to world travelers and men, women and teens committed to making the world a better place, the "100 Cameras Project" digital photographers include:

  • Camera #3, Elizabeth Loebman. This Brooklyn resident and vegetarian used her digital camera to reconnect with her sense of family through Katz's Deli.

  • Camera #9, The Dolphin Club. An eclectic group of people who swim in the San Francisco bay, members of the Dolphin Club used their digital cameras to record their day-to-day realities.

  • Camera #14, Dr. Sylvia Earle. Famed marine biologist and proponent of healthy seas, Dr. Earle has walked deeper on the ocean floor than any other person. Her digital photos reveal what she saw on the ocean floor.

  • Camera #34, Leslie Hirsch. A female cab driver, Leslie shot intriguing portraits of her fellow cabbies.

  • Camera #67, David Schmidt. David is a part-time, stay-at-home dad and author of a wonderful, wacky book called Going Bananas: A Collection of Photographs with Appeal. He took creative license with his digital camera, printing out 100 tiny digital photos of his friend's head, gluing each to a toothpick and sticking them into dozens of cupcakes.
Accessible at www.hp.com/100cameras, the online exhibit includes a display of photographs, background information about each photographer, and a quote about what inspired his or her collection of photos.

The "100 Cameras Project" Promotion

To give other people the chance to use digital imaging solutions to express themselves through digital photos, HP also is sponsoring the "100 Cameras Project" promotion, now in progress though Dec. 29, 2000 at the Web site. By entering a "no-purchase necessary" drawing, participants get the chance to win one of ten HP digital imaging packages, including a personal computer, monitor, printer and digital camera.
