Operations

Worldwide, HP employs approximately 172,000¹ people. We recognize that the large size of our operations comes with large responsibilities. The ways in which we manage our facilities and conduct our business activities can have significant and far-reaching impacts on the environment as well as the welfare and safety of our employees. We are working to minimize those impacts and have made operations a cornerstone of our commitment to environmental responsibility.

Last year, the top priorities for our operations continued to be reducing our energy consumption and limiting the solid and hazardous waste we produce. We also monitor and manage other areas of environmental impact, including fuel used by HP-owned vehicles and through business travel, water used in our facilities and chemicals used in manufacturing and in our facilities (including PFCs, air emissions, chemical releases and ozone-depleting substances).

Announced in May 2006, the HP Workplace Transformation (HPWT) initiative is driving a step-change improvement in our space utilization and energy efficiency. We made significant progress last year toward our goal to reduce energy consumption and resulting greenhouse gas emissions from HP-owned and HP-leased facilities worldwide to 16 percent below 2005 levels by 2010.² More information about HPWT is available in Sustainable building design and Energy-Operations.

We use our environmental, health and safety (EHS) management system to accommodate regular changes in our operations and ensure ongoing compliance with regulations and company standards across all HP facilities. Through this system, we implement controls, assess and report on our performance, and set improvement goals. These activities also create substantial cost savings for HP. For example, in 2007, our U.S. waste diversion strategy achieved savings in landfill and incineration costs totaling $7.5 million.

²HP has updated the baseline year of its operations energy goal from 2006 to 2005 to align with its other energy goals. This is not a change in substance of the goal since HP remains committed to the same 2010 target energy use; it is only a change in the baseline year. As HP operations energy use was approximately 1% higher in 2005 compared to 2006, this increases the goal's percentage reduction to 16% from 2005 by 2010.
