Global citizenship is integral to the success of HP's business. From how we develop products, run our operations, manage our supply chain and engage with stakeholders, it drives us to accept challenges and pursue solutions that are the lifeblood of continuous innovation and growth. It also guides our decision making, ensuring that we uphold the values that have helped distinguish HP as a leader committed to using technology to benefit people, businesses, society and the environment.
–Shane Robison, Executive vice president and chief strategy and technology officer
Ethics and compliance. We rolled out a simpler, values-based version of our Standards of Business Conduct in more than 20 languages, along with a version customized for our suppliers.
Human rights and labor practices. We conducted 129 audits at supplier facilities collectively employing more than 340,000 people, for their performance in meeting our social and environmental standards.
Environmental sustainability. Our Pavilion Entertainment notebook PC won the Walmart Home Entertainment Design Challenge by using a reusable bag, made from 100 percent recycled materials, instead of conventional cardboard and plastic packaging.
Privacy. We continued to refine our Privacy Accountability Model to maintain our industry-leading position on driving accountable decisions and safeguarding personal and proprietary information.
Social investment. We made $46.2 million in social investments focused primarily on education and economic development, reaching a total of nearly $246 million over the past five years.
Global citizenship is larger than any single program or organization at HP. It is one of our seven corporate objectives, brought to life by our employees and rooted in values that have guided HP since the company was founded in 1939. For 70 years, it has encompassed our commitment to hold ourselves to higher standards of integrity, contribution and accountability as we balance and align our business goals with our impacts on society and the environment.
Few companies have the capabilities of HP to make meaningful and lasting contributions to improving how people work and live. Our portfolio of products, services and solutions leads the IT industry. Our operations, infrastructure and influence span the globe.
Our employees, 321,0001 strong, include many of the most accomplished professionals in the world; we believe their collective talent and expertise is unrivaled. And our ongoing dialogue with diverse stakeholders—customers, employees, investors, suppliers, governments and nongovernmental organizations—helps us understand and respond to their expectations of HP.
Building on our longstanding efforts, in 2008 we refined our framework for managing global citizenship to focus on five areas: ethics and compliance, human rights and labor practices, environmental sustainability, privacy and social investment.
Our work in these five areas generates insights, innovation and best practices that fuel the growth of our business and distinguish our brand. For example, we are promoting human rights throughout the IT industry's global supply chain, designing products and services to reduce their environmental impact, protecting the personal information of our customers and employees, and transforming teaching and learning through creative applications of technology.
Our Global Citizenship Council manages global citizenship as a strategic function integrated across HP. The Council is chaired by our vice president of global citizenship and comprises senior executives, including those responsible for each of the five focus areas.
We also look outside our organization for input and guidance. Our Stakeholder Advisory Council provides feedback on our global citizenship priorities and performance. In addition, we collaborate with leaders, such as World Wildlife Fund (WWF), to better address urgent social and environmental issues.
Engaging with governments and regulators is also important to HP's business. We communicate our views to influence public policy decisions that affect our global citizenship priorities, such as those relating to innovation, privacy, education and the environment. We carry out all public policy engagements in a transparent and appropriate manner that complies with our Standards of Business Conduct.
In 2009 and beyond, global citizenship will continue to be central to the success of HP—and to the success of our customers. As the world responds to a host of urgent economic, environmental and social challenges, HP's commitment to leading positive and lasting change will help guide our business, develop breakthrough offerings and drive business value.
