Earth Hour Turn Out the Lights
HP has once again joined forces with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to raise awareness of climate change.

HP is supporting WWF’s Earth Hour initiative to join cities around the world as they literally “turn out the lights” between 8 and 9 p.m. on March 29, 2008.

If you want to make a difference in the fight against global warming, please join us and turn out the lights!

HP's commitment to environmental responsibility

As a global technology leader, HP recognizes the impact we have on our environment. The IT industry is responsible for two percent of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide (Gartner, September 2007). HP has specific goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from our operations and supply chain and to improve the energy efficiency of our products.  However, HP also believes that the IT industry, and HP in particular, has an incredible opportunity to impact the other 98 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions by offering innovative solutions to limit the carbon footprint of the world around us.

We take our responsibilities to the planet very seriously – and it shows.

»   We offer our customers a variety of energy efficient products.
» We exceeded our goal to recycle one billion pounds of equipment and are on track to recover 2 billion pounds by 2010
» We increased our use of renewable energy through solar and wind power.
» We close the loop and use recycled print cartridges in our new cartridges, without compromising quality
» Our Halo Collaboration Studios reduce emissions from business travel
» Our Dynamic Smart Cooling conserves energy in data centers.

HP’s Joint Initiative with WWF

At HP, we realize our own strength and believe in exercising our influence for good, but we realize that we cannot do it alone.

HP’s sponsorship of Earth Hour is part of the company’s joint initiative with WWF that began in 2006.
HP and WWF collaborate to combat climate change around the globe. Together, we leverage our proven experience in technology innovation and environmental conservation to:

  • reduce greenhouse gas emissions
  • improve energy use
  • educate and inspire others
  • use technology in conservation.

In support of similar WWF initiatives to drive greater community awareness and action around behavior affecting climate change, HP Canada recent made a $50,000 grant to the WWF-Canada to support the development of its new online community, called The Good Life, which will help participants learn how they can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and will track the ongoing reduction in emissions. While other Web sites calculate the volume of pollution individuals produce, The Good Life takes a different approach by crediting individuals for the actions they are taking to their reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The use of HP Instant-on Technology has reduced emissions by over 5.25 million tonnes of CO2 to date – the equivalent of removing over 1.1 million cars from the road for 1 year.
Limiting the amount and types of materials used in HP PCs has saved enough metal in 18 months to build another Eiffel Tower.
HP’s solar power installation in San Diego, CA is expected to save $750,000 in energy costs over the next 15 years and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 1 million pounds per year, or nearly 16 million pounds during the next 15 years.
HP’s Telework program saved an estimated 2.5 million round-trip commutes in one year, avoiding roughly 65 million miles of road travel and almost 28,000 tonnes of CO2
HP is consolidating its data centers from 85 to 6 worldwide – saving enough electricity to power all the homes in the city of Palo Alto, CA for more than a year.
