You can help reduce the environmental impact while using computers and peripherals by following these simple guidelines.

choose the right equipment for your needs

  • Choose the right sized monitor. Larger monitors use more energy. For example, a 17inch monitor consumes 35 percent more electricity than a 14-inch monitor.
  • HP's LCD monitors use a third of the energy used by conventional CRT monitors.
  • HP's All-in-One's do the work that used to require several machines, resulting in fewer materials, less bulk, and potentially reduced energy consumption.

conserve resources

  • Turn off your computer, monitor and peripherals when not in use
  • Enable the power management features on PC's and peripherals such as sleep mode and hibernate mode. The system will automatically convert to a low energy mode when not in use, cutting energy usage to less than half. To increase savings, reduce the time delay before your equipment reverts to sleep or hibernate mode.
  • Use of screen savers can stop your computer from going into power saving modes.
  • Choose electronic manuals instead of paper based manuals when possible.
  • Use e-mail instead of distributing hardcopy messages or documents.
  • View e-mail messages, documents and files on screen and print only when necessary. Set view options, font sizes and text/background color to enhance on screen readability.
  • Save messages, documents and files electronically rather than in filing cabinets.
  • When printing, use the Econo- or Draft-Mode feature to reduce the amount of ink or toner used.
  • Use N-up printing capability (multiple pages printed on 1 page) when possible on printers that have this feature.
  • Print using automatic or manual duplex capability (printing on both sides of a page) to reduce paper usage on printer models that have this capability. Refer to your manual to determine if your printer has automatic or manual duplex feature.
  • Decrease the margins of the page to save paper when printing long documents.
  • Buy HP Office Recycled paper where available.

extend the life of your computer

  • Upgrade your system with memory, processors, system board, power supplies, or mass storage device modules rather than disposing and replacing your existing system when you can.

product end-of-life management

  • Recycle or donate your computer hardware. You can recycle your computer hardware using HP's hardware recycling program available in many countries.
  • Return used HP toner and ink cartridges to HP for recycling. Use HP's printing supplies recycling program available in many countries.
  • Recycle used paper and packaging. Whenever possible, separate white paper from mixed paper. Recycled white paper provides the highest grade recycled feed stock to the recycling stream from which recycled office paper is derived.
  • Recycle inkjet/LaserJet Overhead Transparencies where recycling services are available. In the U.S., please call (208) 323-2551 for information on recycling inkjet/LaserJet Overhead Transparencies (OHT's).
