HP has a long commitment to waste reduction and it has demonstrated that commitment again by wining recycling awards at three California sites. Palo Alto, Roseville and Woodland were all given awards by the Waste Reduction Awards Program, sponsored by the California Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) (http://www.ciwmb.ca.gov/wrap/).

WRAP winner logoCalifornia generates approximately 66 million tons of solid waste every year. Roughly 50 percent of this waste comes from the business sector. To reduce this volume, the California EPA developed WRAP to honor businesses that demonstrate leadership in the development of innovative and aggressive programs to reduce the amount of nonhazardous solid waste they generate. The Roseville site is one of only 14 businesses to have won the WRAP award every year since it was established in 1993.

Some of the recycling efforts of the past year include:

  • The donation of more than 43 tons of used and old furniture from the Palo Alto site to school and non-profit groups. This effort saved hp more than $18,000.
  • Recycling more than 260 tons of electronic equipment at the PRS facility in Roseville.
  • Using 30% post consumer computer paper at every site in California.
  • Diverting more than 2.7 million pounds of waste from the landfill at the Roseville site. This saved $2.4 million in disposal costs and packaging expenses.
  • Employing a 40:1 compaction system that allows the Roseville site to recycle their Styrofoam. The Styrofoam is made into house trim is then sold in Home Depot stores.
  • Diverting almost 100% the solid waste over the past two quarters at the Woodland site.
