Co-founded HP with David Packard.
With David Packard, William R. (Bill) Hewlett was co-founder of Hewlett-Packard Company. Hewlett resigned as president in 1977, and retired as chief executive officer in 1978 in accordance with his previously announced plans for management succession within HP. He then served as chairman of HP's Executive Committee until 1983, when he became vice chairman of the HP board of directors. In 1987, he was named director emeritus, and he served in that position until his death on January 12, 2001. |

With Bill Hewlett, David Packard was co-founder of Hewlett-Packard Company. In September 1993, he retired as chairman of the board and was named chairman emeritus. He served in that position until his death on March 26, 1996. |
