HP Participates in Capitol Hill Math & Science Fair to Promote Public/Private Partnerships

Statement by Rachael Bertone Education Program Manager, HP Philanthropy and Education

For Immediate Release: June 27, 2006

“Hewlett-Packard applauds the TAP Campaign for coordinating today’s Math & Science Fair on Capitol Hill. HP takes seriously its responsibility to partner with the Federal government and promote and support education in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. HP praises all those Members of Congress who are working together in a bipartisan fashion to help direct government resources towards our nation’s education system and future workforce.

“Public and private funding in the STEM fields from companies such as HP is integral to the success of maintaining and growing America’s global competitiveness. The United States must nurture and invest in a highly educated and well-trained workforce, requiring a strong commitment to education and training, including continued investments in our nation's schools.

“Just last month, HP announced it is awarding 170 schools across the United States and Puerto Rico more than $7 million in mobile technology, cash and professional development as part of its 2006 HP Technology for Teaching grant program. Over the last 20 years, HP has contributed more than $1 billion in cash and equipment to schools, universities, community organizations and other nonprofit organizations around the world.

“With countries such as India and China becoming increasingly competitive in today’s economy, it is crucial that American companies be able to maintain their leadership in innovation. HP is proud to participate in today’s Math & Science Fair to raise public awareness for the need to provide an environment favorable to cultivating American’s future skilled scientists and engineers.

“Keeping America competitive needs to be a top priority and HP strongly supports members of Congress working on ways to make this a reality.”
