HP Supports Senate Energy Efficiency Legislation

Statement by Paul Perez, vice president, Storage, Networks & Infrastructure, HP and David Isaacs, director, global public policy, HP

For Immediate Release: December 8, 2006

Hewlett-Packard applauds the U.S. Senate for passing legislation S.3684 that directs the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to conduct a study analyzing the rapid growth and energy consumption of computer data centers by the Federal Government and private enterprise.   We especially appreciate the strong leadership of Senators George Allen (R-VA), Jeff Bingaman (D-NM), and Barbara Boxer (D-CA).

It is imperative in today’s world of rising energy demand and costs that measures be taken to increase cost-effective, energy efficient technology. HP is a leader in addressing energy conservation through a holistic approach that reduces customers’ total cost of ownership (TCO) by enhancing the energy efficiency of their data centers.  HP’s approach includes evaluating a customers’ environment and then taking into consideration the multiple variables and needs of that customer to provide the most cost-effective and environmentally sound solution.

Two recent examples of HP’s energy innovation include its BladeSystem C-Class servers that will deliver 40 percent higher energy efficiency than a comparable number of discrete servers and its Dynamic Smart Cooling energy management system that aims to bridge the gap between facilities and IT to help customers dramatically reduce data center cooling costs by 20 to 45%.

As a founding member of the Green Grid, a global organization whose goals are supported by the EPA and which seeks to decrease data center energy consumption, HP looks forward to working with both Congress and the Administration to encourage and advance the innovation of energy efficient technology.

This important legislation already passed the U.S. House of Representatives last July, and as such, HP urges President George W. Bush to sign this bipartisan legislation into law.  HP looks forward to working with Congress, the EPA, IT industry leaders and end-users to preserve and increase our nation’s energy efficiency.
