HP Supports Senate GOP Legal Reform Agenda
Statement by John Hassell, HP Director of Federal & State Government Affairs
For Immediate Release: May 26, 2005
“HP supports Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) and the Senate Leadership in their efforts to implement meaningful legal reforms so we can end unnecessary litigation. HP particularly applauds the Senate for listing Patent Reform among their top agenda items.
“Currently, litigation is the only significant means of disputing an issued patent, costing innovators across the nation billions of dollars which could be better used for research and development.
“While the Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) performs critical functions for HP and the technology industry by helping move innovative products and services to market, we must create alternative avenues to settling disputes as opposed to just running into court. Common sense says the PTO should have the authority to resolve patent disputes between adversaries and not abuse our already overburdened legal system.
“HP commends the Senate Leadership and its efforts to create a fair and balanced patent system. We look forward to working with Congress in order to protect the nation’s patent process and maintain America’s competitiveness in today’s global marketplace.”
