HP Supports U.S. Energy Efficiency Legislation

Statement by Paul Perez, vice president, Storage, Networks & Infrastructure, HP

For Immediate Release: July 12, 2006

“Hewlett-Packard applauds the U.S. House of Representatives for passing today H.R. 5646, legislation that directs the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to conduct a study analyzing the rapid growth and energy consumption of computer data centers by the Federal Government and private enterprise. In particular, HP would like to thank U.S. Representatives Mike Rogers (R-MI) and Anna Eshoo (D-CA) for leading the nation’s effort in preserving our nation’s energy resources and environment.

“HP supports efforts to protect the environment while providing customers overall cost-effective, environmentally responsible solutions. HP has a long history of demonstrating leadership in operational energy efficiency and the company’s broad portfolio of energy efficient products and services offers both sustainable growth for large-scale customers and a distinct competitive advantage overall. HP is a founding member of The Green Grid, an open global organization whose goals are supported by the EPA, and which seeks to decrease IT datacenter energy consumption.

“H.R. 5646 reflects a sound and balanced approach to analyzing the energy impacts of IT infrastructure - from silicon, servers & software to power & cooling infrastructure in datacenters - while recognizing the importance of encouraging continued investment in basic research and product engineering that can deliver improved energy efficiency through innovative, cost-effective technology.

“HP’s innovative leadership in energy research over the past 12 years has led to its holistic Power and Cooling approach, delivering an energy efficient adaptive infrastructure comprising both products and services to the marketplace. This approach continues to minimize power consumption from HP server & storage systems in IT datacenters. HP’s current technologies such as our Dynamic Power Saver and Thermal Logic capabilities in HP’s BladeSystem server blades maximize power density and optimize power utilization. For the future, HP is driving even greater efforts to encompass the entire data center environment to deliver the most efficient unit of work per watt for IT customers.

“HP looks forward to working with Congress, the EPA, IT industry leaders and end-users through The Green Grid to preserve and increase our nation’s energy efficiency.”
