HP Supports Sen. Cornyn Legislation on Highly Skilled Workers Statement by John Hassell, HP Director of Federal & State Government Affairs For Immediate Release: May 2, 2006
“HP applauds Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) for introducing legislation today to attract and retain highly skilled workers. This legislation is critical to maintaining America's competitiveness and ensuring that American companies like HP can continue to remain innovative in today’s global marketplace. “In the heated rhetoric on both sides of the aisle, this is one key component of legal immigration that is too often left out of the debate on Capitol Hill. “With countries such as India and China becoming increasingly competitive in today’s economy, it is crucial that American companies be able to maintain their leadership in innovation. HP is committed to partnering with the US government to help educate American students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. “However, until there are enough American students graduating in those fields to meet the demands for innovation in the 21st century, U.S. companies should not be forced to fall behind their global competitors. Additionally, many of these professionals from around the world are actually educated at American universities, and it is most beneficial for them to apply their advanced degrees on American breakthroughs at American companies with American workers. “Keeping America competitive needs to be a top priority and HP strongly supports members of Congress working on ways to make this a reality.” About HP HP is a technology solutions provider to consumers, businesses and institutions globally. The company’s offerings span IT infrastructure, global services, business and home computing, and imaging and printing. For the four fiscal quarters ended Jan. 31, 2006, HP revenue totaled $87.9 billion.
