HP Supports House Hearing on Competitiveness in the 21st Century

Statement by John Hassell, HP Director of Federal & State Government Affairs

Released February 9, 2006

HP applauds Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez and Chairman Tom Davis (R-VA) for holding the important hearing “Sharpening Our Edge: Staying Competitive in the 21st Century Marketplace” today on American competitiveness. As President Bush outlined in his State of the Union Address last week, and Chairman Davis and Secretary Gutierrez highlighted today in their joint press conference, maintaining America’s competitiveness needs to be a top priority and this hearing is an important first step in that direction.

As the global economy has become more competitive with India, China and other emerging countries making significant investments in education, technology, and research and development, the United States needs to continue to increase its investments in these important fields. The American Competitiveness Initiative promotes these priorities by boosting research and development funding, making permanent an enhanced R&D tax credit, investing in math and science education, and developing a well-trained workforce for the 21st Century.

HP knows first hand the demands that the United States will have to meet to remain competitive today and tomorrow in the global marketplace. U.S. economic security cannot be secured by the private sector alone, it will require a team effort of the government and private sector.

HP is hopeful that lawmakers from both sides of the aisle will work together toward implementing sound policies to invest in America’s innovation leadership. HP looks forward to working with lawmakers to make the proposals outlined in the American Competitiveness Initiative a reality.
