HP Disappointed in Senate Cloture Vote on Immigration

Statement by David Isaacs, HP Director of Government Affairs

For Immediate Release: June 28, 2007

WASHINGTON, D.C., June 28, 2007 – "HP is disappointed that the U.S. Senate was unable to move forward on important immigration legislation today.  The failure to pass this legislation is damaging to America’s competitiveness and the high tech industry because it means that critical efforts to reform the H-1B visa and employment-based green card systems for highly-educated foreign professionals will unfortunately suffer as a result.

“However, this issue is too important for us to give up.  Because a highly-skilled, highly-educated workforce is such a priority for HP and so crucial to American competitiveness, we are committed to continuing our efforts to work with Congress to fix the outdated visa system and ensure America can attract top international talent.

“HP simply must have the ability to recruit and retain the highly-skilled workers we need in order to remain competitive in the global marketplace.  That ability requires an increase in the cap for H-1B visas and a more streamlined process for employment-based visas.

“HP remains committed to partnering with the U.S. government to help educate American students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics in order to prepare Americans for these high-skilled jobs.  However, until there are enough American students graduating in those fields to meet the demands for innovation in the 21st century, U.S. companies should not be forced to fall behind their global competitors.”
