Instructions for CD/DVD tattoos

» Creating the tattoo » Printing the tattoo » Applying the tattoo

Materials:
  • HP CD/DVD Tattoos

Recommended: First, watch the video at the top of this page. Then, for best results, follow the print setting directions below before you print your HP CD/DVD Tattoo.

Creating the tattoo

Customize an HP CD/DVD Tattoo label with your own photo and text by taking the following steps within the photo tool:
  1. Choose a design theme from the selections on the right.
  2. Click the "Add Photos & Text" button.
  3. Click on any picture or image area to upload your own digital photo(s). The tool zooms in and reveals photo controls near the top of the screen and on the right. Please note that for a successful photo upload your file size should be smaller than 2MB.
  4. Choose "Replace photo" to import your own digital image or select "No photo" to use the stock image.
  5. Use the controls on the right to edit your photo and scale the size up or down. If needed, adjust photo placement by clicking and dragging the image. Make sure your photo covers the entire CD, especially the outer ring.
  6. When you are satisfied with the image, zoom out of the photo control area by clicking "Done with edit" at the top.
  7. To add your own custom text, click on any area where you see "Click here to edit text" and follow the instructions for editing text. If you choose not to enter your own text, highlight and delete the placeholder text that appears on the screen so it does not print on your tattoo. You can control font type, font color, and font size with the controls on the right.
  8. When you are satisfied with the text, zoom out of the text control area by clicking "Done with edit" at the top.
  9. Customize further by choosing a design overlay on the right.
  10. Now you are ready to print. Select "Download & Print" at the top of the screen and follow the instructions below.

Printing the tattoo

NOTE: These instructions are for HP color inkjet printers, which load from the front. If your printer loads from the back, please consult your printer's user guide. Try printing a test page before using any specialty paper.
  1. Click the "Download & Print" button at the top of the screen.
  2. If desired, use the "Draft print" button to see the printed results before you print on the HP CD/DVD Tattoo. Use regular 8.5" x 11" paper.
  3. When you're ready to print the HP CD/DVD Tattoo, click the "Save & Print Final Version" button. Your design will download into an Adobe Acrobat PDF (which you can save and keep for future printing, if desired).

Please note: Your design will appear backwards on the screen and when you print it on your HP CD/DVD Tattoo. However, the image will be correct when you apply the tattoo to your disc.

  4. Load a single HP CD/DVD Tattoo in your printer, arrows pointing toward the printer and glossy side up. The artwork prints on the matte/underside of the label.

  5. Click on the printer icon on the PDF. A printer dialog box will open. In the dialog box:
    1. Set page scaling to "None".
    2. Check the "Auto-rotate and Center" box. If needed, uncheck "Choose Paper Source by PDF Page Size."
    3. Open "Properties".
      1. Select paper size of 5" x 7". If the 5" x 7" paper size isn't in the pull-down list, select "User Defined Paper Size" and enter width as 5" and height as 7".
      2. Set your paper type to "Premium Plus Photo Paper".
      3. Set your print quality to "Best".
  6. Print the artwork. Set aside and let dry for about an hour before labeling a disc (24 hour dry time is recommended for optimum image quality).

Applying the tattoo

  1. We recommend that you apply the printed CD/DVD tattoo with the CD or DVD placed inside the case that contains your HP CD/DVD Tattoos or a CD/DVD jewel case. Be sure to place on a level surface before applying your tattoo.
  2. Place the disc on the spindle of the case facing up. Do not label the data side of the disc-doing this will ruin the disc.
  3. With the glossy side of the tattoo facing you, push out the center of the CD/DVD tattoo, as shown in Picture 1.

  4. Peel the printed CD/DVD tattoo off the sheet without touching the adhesive rings. See Picture 2.

  5. With the glossy side facing up, gently curl the CD/DVD tattoo into a U-shape and align the center hole with the center hole of your disc. The CD/DVD tattoo hole is slightly larger than the disc hole to help with alignment. See Picture 3.
