HP LaserJet and OfficeJet - Install Model Script for a UNIX operating system

Introduction

This document provides instructions on how to download and install model script files for UNIX operating systems in order to print from HP LaserJet and HP Officejet printers.
note:
HP discontinued support for UNIX in 2019.

About Model Scripts for HP-UX

A model script is a printer driver for UNIX operating systems. For HP LaserJet printers and HP Officejet printers, HP provides product-specific model scripts that can be installed from the HP Support Web site and generic model scripts that can be installed using the HP Jetdirect Printer Installer software.
note:
If you do not have HP Jetdirect Printer Installer, go to www.hp.com/go/jetdirectunix_software to install the software. This software is required for automatic installation of model scripts.

Install product-specific model scripts

To install and download product-specific model scripts, follow these steps:
  1. Go to HP Support (www.hp.com/go/support).
  2. Click Drivers & Downloads, type your product name in the Find by product search box, and then click Go.
  3. Select the printer model from the list of search results.
  4. Select UNIX from the list of operating systems.
  5. Under the Driver section, click the HP Unix Modelscripts link.
  6. Click the Installation Instructions tab to view or print the instructions, and then click Download.
  7. Click Save as and note the location of the saved file, and then click Save.
  8. Browse to the location where you saved the file and follow the on-screen instructions to install the model scripts.

Install generic model scripts

To install generic model scripts using the HP Jetdirect Printer installer, follow these steps:

Step 1: Download the file to a temporary location

  1. Make sure that the printer is connected to a local network or Internet.
  2. Find your printer in the Printer driver for HP-UX table, right-click the model script filename, and then select Save Target as .
  3. Save the file to a temporary directory (/tmp/net_lj3x, for example), and then click Save.

note:
Make sure you have the IP address of your printer. To obtain the IP address, print a Configuration Page from the Control Panel.
  1. Log in to your root account and at the command prompt, type hppi or /opt/hpnpl/hppi to start the HP Jetdirect Printer Installer for UNIX.
  2. Type 1 for Spooler Administration.
  3. Type 4 for Install New Model Script.
  4. At the prompt, type the full path to download the model script (opt/hpnpl/tmp/net_lj3x, for example).
    note:
If the model script previously installed is the latest, the software will not perform any updates.
  5. Type the IP address of the printer for which you want to install the model script.
    note:
The software will query information about the printer and install the model script if it recognizes the type of printer.
  6. If the type of printer is not recognized (if the software cannot currently communicate with the printer, for instance), do the following to install the model script:
    1. Type y (yes) to continue installing the new model script.
    2. When a list of printers displays, type the number corresponding to the printer Model in the list for which you want to install the model script.
