Course overview

This six-hour hands-on course provides an immersion in the use and technology of the iPAQ Pocket PC. It includes detailed discussion of software, hardware, mobility and more.


Prerequisites

Participants do not need any previous Pocket PC experience. A Pocket PC with associated Companion CD is required as well as a PC with ActiveSync (version 3.5 or greater).


Audience

This course is designed for the novice or the experienced iPAQ Pocket PC user.

Introduction to the iPAQ Pocket PC (60 minutes)

  • Introduction and history of the iPAQ Pocket PC - Where it came from and why it has evolved. Difference between Pocket PC 2002 and Windows Mobile Pocket PC (Pocket PC 2003)
  • Getting to know your iPAQ Pocket PC - It is a simple device with many features. Adding features to your iPAQ Pocket PC (Hardware and Software).
  • Powering up the Pocket PC - The first power up and configuration. What to do when it does not power up for the first time (or after an extended period of time). What is on the Companion CD.
  • Understanding and using the menus - How to use the menus and where they are located.
  • Entering Data - The various ways on interacting with the Pocket PC. Discussion of keyboards and voice recognition.
  • Differences and advantages of the iPAQ Pocket PC over other devices.
  • Guided practice session with the iPAQ Pocket PC

Optimizing your iPAQ Pocket PC (60 minutes)

  • Security - Why and the different levels. Teaching your h5xxx series to use your fingerprint for security. Do's and Don'ts about security.
  • Working with Running Applications - Starting, stop-ping, and working with them.
  • ITask Menus - How to setup and use the iTask button. Configuring the iTask button to get your application running quickly.
  • Managing memory - Working with memory (built-in and add on). Setting for maximizing your memory for the way you work.
  • Maximizing your battery life - How to make your battery last. What happens if you let it run low. Making sure you get the most out of your batteries' physical life. Charging cycles that make them last.
  • Backup and restore.
  • How to use the extra ROM storage space.
  • Upgrading your iPAQ ROM.
  • Loading programs.
  • Guided practice session with the iPAQ Pocket PC.

Getting connected (60 minutes)

  • Active Sync-ActiveSync is more than just syncing your data. Full discussion of the ActiveSync utility. How to ActiveSync via the wireless connection (802.11).
  • Discussion of the wireless capabilities of the iPAQ and which one is right for you.
  • IR capabilities of the Pocket PC. How to configure and use. Keyboard interfacing. Beaming data to other devices.
  • IR capabilities with other devices.
  • Bluetooth Operations - How to setup and use a Bluetooth network, Bluetooth community, and using ActiveSync with BlueTooth.
  • Wireless connection - Using a wireless connection (802.11). Discussion of connection manager, con-figuring different connections, VPN settings.
  • Surfing the net - Using Pocket IE to surf the web. What is a mobile enabled website.
  • Guided practice session with the iPAQ Pocket PC.

Control your mobile life (60 minutes)

  • Calendar - Using the calendar to schedule appoint-ments and events. Syncing your outlook calander with your iPAQ Pocket PC.
  • Contacts - Keeping your contact information with you.
  • Inbox - Use the Pocket PC Inbox to receive and send email while on the go.
  • Tasks - An easy place to keep track of your to-do list.
  • Notes - Use the notes feature to throwaway those scraps of paper

Microsoft Specifics (60 minutes)

  • Detailed discussion of Pocket Word and Pocket Excel. What are the differences between the desk-top version and the Pocket PC versions. What happen when files are transferred.
  • Microsoft Reader - Bringing the library to your Pock-et PC.
  • File Explorer - Windows explorer for your Pocket PC.
  • Media Player - Local content and streaming.

Open discussion (Bits-n-bytes) (60 Minutes)

  • GPS - Global Positioning System hardware and soft-ware for the Pocket PC.
  • Accessories and Software - Various accessories, add-on and software available for your Pocket PC.
  • Using the Pocket PC in your environment - Using the Pocket PC in conjunction with your environment.
