This is a 2-day hands-on training course featuring physical hands-on installation and initial setup experience with a variety of HP c-Class BladeSystem hardware.


Prerequisites

  • Basic computer hardware and site setup experience.

Hardware installers and initial site setup engineers responsible for HP c-Class BladeSystem hardware installation and initialization.

Students completing this course will be prepared to:

  • Identify the components of an HP c-Class BladeSystem and their function in the system
  • Locate detailed specifications and configuration tools for HP c-Class BladeSystems and their components online
  • Identify proper physical placement of a HP c-Class BladeSystem enclosure and rack related to power and cooling
  • Install all HP BladeSystem components properly and securely, observing safety regulations for personnel and equipment
  • Power up an HP BladeSystem and determine status of all components based on states of indicators and locally-accessed components such as the Insight Display
  • Perform initial configuration of HP c-Class BladeSystem components such as the enclosure name and network addressing for the Onboard Administrator and c-Class server blade iLOs locally using the Insight Display
  • Perform initial configuration of c-Class interconnects when locally connected to the interconnect itself
  • Configure/license advanced features for power and thermal management
  • Follow the procedure to update firmware in HP c-Class BladeSystem components

HP c-Class BladeSystem Overview

  • Identify c-Class BladeSystem hardware components by sight and function including enclosures, blades, interconnects, power supplies and fans

HP c-Class BladeSystem Enclosures

  • Locate and identify the features and components of the HP BladeSystem c-Class enclosures
  • Identify device and interconnect bays by number
  • Locate fans by number and cooling zone
  • locate power supplies by number and power zone
  • Cable Onboard Administrator stacking links

Insight Display Manager

  • Access the Insight Display Manager from the enclosure
  • Display enclosure settings and configuration
  • Use the Insight Display to set the enclosure name
  • Display enclosure health status
  • Display alerts and details including problem identification and repair procedures from the Insight Display
  • Activate/deactivate the enclosure UID from the Insight Display

HP c-Class BladeSystems Power and Cooling

  • Identify the components of the power architecture used in BladeSystem c-Class systems, including power supplies, power modes and PDUs
  • Identify AC power options
  • Initialize Thermal Logic technology
  • Set different power redundancy options through the Insight Display based on power requirements and available power supplies
  • Configure AC power redundancy
  • Install power supplies and fans to properly power and cool blades and interconnects
  • Retrieve power and cooling status from the Insight Display
  • Describe the cooling technologies designed for the HP BladeSystem c-Class systems

HP c-Class Onboard Administrator Initialization

  • Install an Onboard Administrator (OA)
  • Configure network connectivity to all OAs in an enclosure from the Insight Display
  • Cable and configure OA stacking links
  • Access an active OA using a local network and/or serial connection
  • Initiate a manual failover from the active OA to the standby OA

HP c-Class Blade Installation

  • Install c-Class server blades in a c-Class enclosure
  • Plan server mezzanine installation based on compatibility and functionality among server blades in the same c-Class enclosure
  • Install a mezzanine card on a c-Class server blade
  • Install a hot-plug disk drive into a c-Class server blade
  • Identify storage, tape and PCI expansion modules by functionality and relationship to a server blade device bay
  • Configure an enclosure, matching server blade configurations with power supplies and cooling fans
  • Display blade configuration and status from the Insight Display

HP c-Class Interconnect Installation & Initialization

  • Identify interconnect technologies used in c-Class BladeSystems
  • Install interconnect modules based on technology of the module and configuration of server blades
  • Use the Onboard Administrator to configure initial network access to an interconnect module
  • Display mapping between server blade ports and interconnect ports from the Insight Display and Onboard Administrator
  • Enable/disable interconnect bay cross-links
  • Use the Insight Display to evaluate configuration matches/mismatches between server blades and interconnects
  • Cable Virtual Connect stacking links

HP c-Class Firmware Updates

  • Display current firmware revisions of c-Class components
  • Update firmware from the Onboard Administrator, iLO and a booted firmware update program
  • Use HP Smart Update Manager (HPSUM) to update firmware in c-Class BladeSystems

Server Software Deployment with HP SmartStart

  • Identify the features of SmartStart and its components
  • Locate and download SmartStart from the HP software website
  • Boot a server blade from a SmartStart CD/DVD
  • Initiate an OS installation with SmartStart
