Course overview

In this 3-day course, students will learn how to successfully manage HP BladeSystem with Integrity servers. This course focuses on system administration components rather than hardware deployment. The course introduces the BladeSystem enclosure, Integrity pre-i2 server blades with iLO 2 and the EFI boot interface, Integrity i2 server blades with iLO 3 and UEFI boot interface, BladeStorage models, Interconnect modules, HP Onboard Administrator, with an overview of HP Virtual Connect and HP BladeSystem c-Class server mgmt. using HP Systems Insight Manager. The course is 60% lecture and 40% labs.


Prerequisites

  • Operating system administration experience (HC590S) topics are not focused on any specific operating system, although Operating system examples in this course are HP-UX 11i

Audience

  • Experienced software administrators responsible for managing and monitoring HP BladeSystem with Integrity c-Class blade servers

Course objectives

  • Configure a c-Class BladeSystem based on the functionality of available components
  • Access administrative features of the Integrity integrated Lights Out (iLO) 2 and 3 on Integrity pre-i2 and i2 server blades
  • Configure and display enclosure-level parameters and operational status of the HP BladeSystem through the Onboard Administrator web-based and command line interfaces
  • Use the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) and Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) boot interfaces
  • Display c-Class BladeSystem component configuration and status with HP SIM

Introduction to HP c-Class BladeSystems

  • Identify the features and components of an HP c-Class Integrity BladeSystem
  • Locate blades, interconnects, fans and power supplies by bay number
  • Use HP-UX administration commands to identify hardware-specific information
  • Use System Management Homepage to identify blade-specific configuration and status
  • Access online sites for additional BladeSystem tools and information

Using the HP Integrity BladeSystem Onboard Administrator

  • Use the Insight Display for basic enclosure monitoring and troubleshooting
  • Configure the Onboard Administrator (OA) from the Insight Display
  • Access the OA from a web browser
  • Exercise the features of the OA as an operator
  • Identify OA features only available to the administrator

Using the HP Integrity EFI and UEFI

  • Describe the major components f the Integrity firmware boot architecture
  • Identify the sections/partitions of an Integrity boot disk
  • Follow the integrity boot process from the Virtual Front Panel of the MP
  • Configure the EFI boot manager menu
  • Display mapped media
  • Differentiate between bootable sections and other disk sections
  • Traverse the EFI directory trees
  • Select and configure the console
  • Invoke and interact with a boot loader

c-Class BladeSystem Interconnects and Virtual Connect

  • Explain the functions of different types of interconnect modules in an Integrity BladeSystem
  • Correlate Integrity server blade embedded and mezzanine ports to specific interconnect ports
  • Display port mapping between server blade ports and interconnect ports
  • Explore the functionality of the Virtual Connect Manager

Using the BladeSystem Integrated Manager Plug-in for HP SIM

  • Verify HP Systems Insight Manager software installation
  • Perform initial database configuration
  • Start, stop and verify run status of the HP SIM daemons
  • Configure basic SSL and SSH security for HP SIM
  • Access HP SIM from a web browser
  • Use the BladeSystem Integrated Manager plug-in to display status and configuration information about Integrity BladeSystem enclosures, blades and interconnects
