IT executives define IT consolidation (ITC) as the rationalization and standardization of enterprise technology, replacing multiple, disparate systems and processes with a limited number of common applications and platforms. ITC is usually broadly interpreted, encompassing hardware, services, applications, networks and staff. Drivers of ITC are shifting from a focus on cost reduction to more business-driven rationales, and CIOs now pursue ITC initiatives to reduce costs, improve IT service delivery and enhance business capabilities. CIOs top ITC priorities include IT Process Standardization, Server Consolidation, Storage Consolidation, and Application Consolidation. Lower priorities for consolidation are Service Desks, Database, and IT Management Tool Standardization.
CIOs identify improved business performance as a driver of ITC - for example, enabling reduced lead times for product development, realizing synergies across business processes that would not otherwise exist, or speeding the integration following mergers and acquisitions. ITC can also improve the quality of business decision making and oversight - for example, through consolidating to a single, enterprise wide application architecture. And ITC creates a stronger IT organization, facilitating an effective, efficient infrastructure that supports improved IT service delivery and compliance. ITC initiatives are commonly perceived as a necessary precursor to business transformation.
