The Data Management Forum’s ILM Initiative is putting forward a proposal to the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) to define a vision for ILM as "a new set of management practices based on aligning the business value of information to the most appropriate and cost effective infrastructure."
In its White Paper 'Partnering with HP in Information Lifecycle Management', IDC states "Comprehensive ILM involves a complex set of processes that unite multiple types of information, the applications that gather and consume it, and the people inside and outside the organization who must be linked to the information and to each other."
An avalanche of e-mails. Ever-expanding databases. More and more archived documents to meet regulatory compliance demands. We work in a world overflowing with information—a world where your Customers are challenged every day to utilize this information to create competitive advantage.
And according to the ESG, "ILM is as significant a business process as CRM and ERP. An effective ILM implementation can significantly streamline costs and management efficiencies. IT organizations can actually use ILM processes to more effectively implement CRM and ERP solutions, ensuring that critical data is given top-priority storage resources and is always available."
HP offers ILM solutions in six business areas: Application Solution, Tiered Storage, and Information capture, management, retention, and delivery. For example, in the area of Applications solutions, HP offers solutions in the following domains: Email, Medical, Database, Application Consolidation, Enterprise Content Management, and Rich Media solutions. HP's ILM solutions are described in detail at www.hp.com/go/ilm
The IDC White Paper mentioned above, and available here (in PDF), outlines why ILM represents an opportunity for Channel Partners, and goes on to say "HP, for its part, has done a good job recently of saying where its services organization will play and where it will not, establishing rules to minimize channel conflict." Clearly a win/win situation.
