  What is it?

Business Intelligence, also known as 'BI', is a term currently used to describe a discipline which captures and assesses various aspects of a company, its customers and competitors. This includes processes and software which assist in gathering, storing, analyzing, and providing access to intelligent information on a company's data in order to identify significant trends or patterns that ultimately facilitate the decision-making process and provide the company with a competitive advantage.

  Why does it matter?

Businesses are undergoing a fundamental shift in the way they make decisions. In today's rapidly changing environment, decision making occurs more frequently and at all levels of an organization. Business analytics (BI) software helps organizations answer questions such as: Who are our best suppliers or most profitable customers? Which customers are likely to become profitable, when, and to what extent? What are the root causes of quality issues, and can we cost-effectively minimize them? And what factors or combinations of factors are directly impacting marketing campaigns? (Note 1)

According to IDC’s study The Financial Impact of Business Analytics' published in 2002, the median ROI of business analytics projects is 112%. The long-term potential of BI for Channel Partners includes pull-through sales of the HP product line, including PCs, ProLiant servers, StorageWorks, and Integrity servers.
