"Simply put, we are committed to delivering great Itanium-based Windows products for your scale-up, mission-critical data center needs." Bill Laing General Manager, Windows Server Division Microsoft Corporation

  What is it?

Microsoft and HP have collaborated closely for nearly a decade to deliver leading-edge Itanium-based server solutions. In a recent open letter, Microsoft stated "Microsoft fully supports the Itanium platform for scale-up, mission-critical databases, line-of business applications, and business intelligence deployments. Itanium-based systems deliver the highest levels of reliability, scalability, and performance for the Windows Server platform, as shown in numerous #1 industry benchmarks with Windows Server 2003, SQL Server 2005 and HP Integrity servers"

  Why does it matter?

Microsoft Windows solutions on HP Integrity address the following customers needs:

  • To scale-up from Windows/x86 solutions and platforms
  • A lower-TCO RISC migration/alternative solution, or to migrate of expensive, proprietary RISC solutions
  • To address most demanding Business Intelligence workloads
  • To consolidate SQL Server sprawl

For example, according to the Alinean Whitepaper 'Microsoft SQL Server on HP' published in May 2007, an Alinean study revealed significant opportunity for both cost reduction and improved service delivery through server consolidation of Microsoft SQL Server instances on the HP Integrity platform. Including initial investments in new server hardware, database license upgrades and migration costs, the HP Integrity solutions were projected to reduce IT costs by an impressive 26.5% compared to maintaining and growing the original environments over the three year analysis period. When softer business benefits of reduced downtime and improved time to market of new applications were also included in the comparison, the HP Integrity solutions were projected to reduce total business costs by 47.2%.

Again by example, the primary value to you as a salesperson in implementing HP Integrity based SQL Server solutions for your customers is that it offers you an opportunity to expand your margins and significantly grow your revenues from sales of HP servers, storage devices, and management software; consulting and integration services; and Microsoft software products.

According to the IDC White Paper 'Scalable Windows Servers for the Datacenter', the business benefits associated with deploying Integrity servers with the Windows operating system include:

  • Leveraging the IT discipline associated with datacenter operations, as deploying Windows in the datacenter allows Windows workloads to be supported by more sophisticated and standardized IT processes
  • Central-site management of Windows workloads on scalable servers better leverages programming and system administration skills
  • Reliability, Availability, and Serviceability (RAS) enhancements that have been engineered into HP Integrity servers will result in reduced downtime
  • Scalable server resources will allow many end users to be supported by single or multiple instances of Microsoft products running on a smaller number of servers
  • Customers can now deploy Windows applications by scaling up in addition to scaling out. The choices made will depend on customer preferences, IT skill sets at a given site, and the availability of software that supports scale-out server configurations. The scale-up option gives businesses the option of containing some of the IT operational costs to central-site datacenters, which can reduce expenses that are associated with IT personnel and ongoing maintenance.

  What's HP's solution?

Windows on Integrity solutions cover Industry solutions - such as HP Open Bank for the Financial Services Industry, Infrastructure solutions - such as IT consolidation, and Business solutions - such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Business Intelligence (BI), and Supply chain optimization. Through joint engineering and collaboration, HP delivers best-in-class 64-bit Integrity server solutions with major Windows ISVs including Microsoft, SAP, Oracle, SAS, PeopleSoft, and Siebel. HP solutions engineers work with these partners on performance testing and characterization of the complete solution stack - from application software to hardware. This enables us to develop tools and white papers that allow customers to configure the hardware (and storage) to their specific requirements - tools such as HP Active Answers; sizing tools for Siebel, Peoplesoft, and Oracle DBs; Industry standard benchmarks; and Performance Briefs. Using these tools, customers will know what the performance is going to be, and that it will work - out of the box. Find out more on Integrity Server solutions at http://h71028.www7.hp.com/integrity/cache/405499-0-0-0-121.aspx . And don't forget to check out the new and refreshed Integrity server lineup based on the latest Intel Itanium processor 9100 series, delivering advances in Power and Cooling, Lights Out remote management, and Service Oriented Architecture enabling technologies, as well as offering up to a 20 percent price/performance increase over previous generations.

With HP Systems Insight Manager and HP Integrity Essentials software, customers will see the same types of management elements for Integrity that have been made popular for Windows environments in our ProLiant line. The System Management Homepage, Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) management, and Intelligent Networking Pack are all Essentials that are leveraged from ProLiant, while tools like Partition Manager are unique to Integrity cell-based systems.

Windows on Integrity solutions are of course backed by a broad range of HP Services, including for Business Applications, Continuity & Availability, and Infrastructure Services, as well as Leasing & Financing.
