Types of exams

To achieve an HP Certified Professional Program credential, you are required to take, and pass, specific exam(s). There are three different exam types. All are computer-based; some are delivered via a network of Authorized Test Centers, while some can be taken via the Internet at your own desk.

Test Center exams
(delivered by Prometric, start with prefix HP0-XXX)

HP Certified Professional Program Test Center exams are those exams that require you to demonstrate, in a controlled environment, the mastery of the subject being tested without the assistance of external tools and information resources. These tests are conducted in Prometric test centers throughout the world and are subject to very stringent rules. In particular, there may be no reference material, notebook or handheld computers or cellular telephones taken into the test environment. For more test center information, visit the Frequently Asked Questions page on the Prometric website.

Performance-based exams
(not delivered by Prometric, start with prefix HP0-XXX)

HP performance-based exams require you to demonstrate the mastery of the subject being tested in a controlled, proctored environment. The idea behind performance-based testing is to create an environment that as closely as possible simulates an actual real life setting so that your actual performance can be measured. These tests are conducted in HP performance-based test centers throughout the world and are subject to very stringent rules. In particular, there may be no reference material, notebook or handheld computers or cellular telephones taken into the test environment.

Web-based exams
(start with the prefixes HP2-XXX, HP3-XXX)

HP Certified Professional Program Web-based exams are those exams that require you to demonstrate, in an uncontrolled environment, the mastery of the subject being tested with the benefit of any external tools and information resources you choose. These tests are, however, time-bound and thus, a high degree of mastery is required in order to complete the exam in the given time. These tests are conducted on the web in a secure browser environment and therefore, may be taken in the office or at home 24 hours per day. Note: HP3 exams (exams starting with prefix HP3-XXX) are regional web-based exams available locally in selected regions and may not be applicable in your country. Refer to your regional website for availability in your region.

Student ID required!

In order to register for any exam, you will need to have a valid HP Student ID and a Prometric ID.

What is an HP Student ID?
An HP Student ID is a personal ID number assigned to you by your HP regional certification or training office. The Student ID is your secured entry point into the valuable world of HP training and certification. This unique ID is personally assigned to you and is associated with your certification and training history and determines your benefit entitlement. If you have been issued an HP Certified Professional ID card (not available in all regions) the number printed on that card is your HP Student ID.

Avoid creating multiple Student IDs! This could delay your certification process. If you cannot remember your Student ID or password, please visit the home page of your regional website for instructions on how to recover this information.

How do I obtain a HP Student ID if I do not have one?
The process for obtaining your HP Student ID varies from region to region. For more information, click on your region below:

What is a Prometric ID?
A Prometric Testing ID is a 9 digit (numeric or alpha-numeric) ID assigned to you by Prometric when you schedule your first exam online or via the call center registration method. This is a unique ID, personally assigned to you, and is associated with all your testing history.

Exam Preparation and Exam Preparation Guides

HP has posted an Exam Preparation Guide (EPG) or an Exam Datasheet for most of the certification exams. These guides are designed to help you determine whether you have the skills and knowledge necessary to pass a particular exam. Links for these guides are posted with the exams on the credential requirements pages.

Test analysis conducted by HP and Prometric clearly shows that class attendance, self-study and review, and practical experience are all elements that contribute to your success toward passing the certification exams. Therefore, it is essential that you:

  • Take adequate time to review all the information presented in class
  • Review all reference documentation and support materials
  • Answer all progress reviews contained in the student training materials
  • Complete all written and "hands-on" lab assignments
  • Review self-assessment guides such as the Exam Preparation Guides and the Exam Data Sheets

Helpful Hints

Testing statistics prove that 70% of all certification exams are passed when students take their exams three (3) to seven (7) days after class attendance. This amount of time typically provides adequate study time and allows testing to take place while the information is still fresh. On the converse, the same statistics show over an 80% failure rate for students attempting their exam immediately after a class or if they wait more than two (2) weeks after class completion.

Arrive at the testing site at least 15 minutes before the test is scheduled to begin to sign in. Bring two forms of identification:

  • Picture ID such as a driver's license or company security badge.
  • Major credit card, social security card, ID card or passport.
