Downloading photos from your camera

» Transfer options
» Transfer steps
You’ve captured some special moments with your digital camera. Now it’s time to transfer, or download, your pictures from the camera’s memory card to another location, such as a PC or printer.

When you move pictures off your camera, you free up valuable memory so you can keep shooting. And once they’re transferred, you can organize, edit, print, and share the memories with friends and family. We’ll explain what you need to transfer photos, and give you easy-to-follow steps.

Transfer options
There are several ways to transfer photos, and they’re all relatively simple.

  • USB cable: Connect your camera directly to any PC or printer. Since newer products have USB ports, you can transfer photos to nearly any computer or printer with ease.
  • Memory card: Remove the memory card from your camera and insert it into a card slot on your printer or a card reader on your PC. Its small size and portability make the memory card great for on-the-go printing.
  • Camera dock: Set your camera in this device and transfer photos to your PC with the press of a button. The dock also charges your camera’s rechargeable batteries, and connects to a TV for slideshows
  • Bluetooth: Send photos wirelessly from a Bluetooth-enabled device (such as a camera phone or handheld) to an enabled PC or printer. No cables or components are needed!

Using photo-editing software
If you’d like to transfer photos to your PC, you can download them to photo-editing software, such as HP Image Zone (included on most HP PCs). Besides downloading, HP Image Zone lets you crop or enlarge images, and then share or create printable photo projects. (The HP Activity Centre also features free artwork and projects.)

If you don’t have HP Image Zone, download HP Image Zone Express for free. It has many of the same features as HP Image Zone.

Transfer steps
Here are instructions for each transfer option.

USB
First, connect your camera to your PC or printer using its USB cable, then turn your camera on. You may need to set it to “review” mode.

  1. When you connect a camera to a PC, the PC will automatically detect the connected camera and prompt you to import photos. If not, use HP Image Zone Express to transfer them to your digital photo library.
  2. If you’re connecting an HP digital camera to a printer, the Print Setup Menu will pop up. Just follow the onscreen directions.
  3. When connecting a non-HP digital camera, your printer will display the first image or a series of pictures.

Quick tip: To preserve your camera’s battery power, use a power adapter while transferring.

Memory card
Many PCs and photo-friendly printers have slots for memory cards. After you’ve removed the memory card from your camera, insert it into the card reader slot.

  1. Your PC will detect the card and display thumbnail images in HP Image Zone Express or other photo-editing software.
  2. Your printer will detect the card, and its color display will show the first image or a series of pictures.
  3. Another option is to use an external reader to transfer photos from a memory card. An external reader is a small, inexpensive device that plugs into your PC’s or printer’s USB port.

Camera dock
A camera dock is an optional accessory for transferring photos to your PC or printer. As an added bonus, your camera’s batteries will charge as you’re transferring.

  1. Connect the dock to your PC or printer.
  2. Place the camera in the dock.
  3. Press the Download or Print button, depending on what you’d like to do.

Bluetooth
If you have a Bluetooth-enabled camera phone, you can transfer directly to a Bluetooth-enabled PC or printer, cable-free. Bluetooth is a wireless technology that lets enabled devices communicate with one another. Once communication is established, follow the onscreen prompts.
