Too Good to Waste!
Join HP Canada in Supporting Waste Reduction Week: October 19-25

If you use a commodity or resource carefully and without extravagance, you will never be in need.

From October 19th to 25th, HP Canada will join businesses, municipalities and schools from across the country to participate in Waste Reduction Week (WRW) to prove that there are ways to reduce, reuse and recycle responsibly to protect our resources. Developed and delivered by a coalition of 13 different recycling councils and sister organizations from across the country, WRW aims to inform Canadians about the environmental ramifications of wasteful practices and encourage environmentally conscious decision-making throughout the year.

“We are proud to sponsor Waste Reduction week for the 7th consecutive year,” says Frances Edmonds, HP Canada’s Director of Environmental Programs. “Our long-term support of WRW mirrors HP’s long-term commitment to environmental sustainability which has been in existence since the 1950s. Our Eco Solution programs work to reduce our environmental impact together with that of our customers, partners and suppliers.”

Named one of the top 30 Greenest Employers by Mediacorp and first in NEWSWEEK’s Green Rankings of the 500 largest U.S. companies in 2009, HP has a deep-rooted legacy focused on environmental sustainability that is ingrained in the company today and dates back to founders, Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard.

HP set out its Global Citizenship objectives in the 1950s, established environmental policies and energy conservation guidelines in the early 1970s and became the first IT company to launch a computer recycling program in 1987. In total, HP has recovered more than 1.71 billion pounds to date and intends to achieve its goal of recycling 2 billion pounds of electronic products and supplies by the end of 2010.

Reusing a product extends its life and maximizes its value. Recycling minimizes environmental impacts associated with waste disposal and reduces the need for raw materials and energy to manufacture new products. We estimate that we avoided 300,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions in 2008 through our recycling activities.(1) HP is committed to increasing the volume of our products recovered for reuse and recycling.(2)

As an environmental leader, HP looks to drive company stewardship through its HP Eco Solutions program, which spans product design, reuse and recycling as well as energy and resource efficiency. HP influences industry action by setting high environmental standards in its operations and supply chain, by providing practical solutions to make it easier for customers to reduce their climate impact and through its research on sustainability solutions that support a low-carbon economy. More information is available at www.hp.com/ecosolutions.

In May 2008, HP announced the introduction of the HP Eco Highlights label, a clear and simple-to-read label designed to help customers understand the environmental attributes of a specific product, tool or service. This label will appear on product packaging, data sheets and web pages so it’s easier for customers to make smart environmental purchasing decisions.

HP is also helping to save paper, ink and reduce energy consumption with free software applications. HP’s Smart Web Printing application allows users to print only the content they want from web pages. The software enables users to collect and print selected text or photos from the web and automatically scales a page to fit the width of a standard-size paper so users can print without cut-off edges or unnecessary advertisements.

HP’s Power to Change campaign encourages personal computer users around the world to make behavioral changes in support of the environment. Users download a new desktop widget that tracks the cumulative energy savings associated with participants turning off idle PCs when not in use.

Taking Action: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

HP Canada employees across the country will participate in Waste Reduction Week activities to help raise awareness about ways to reduce the amount of waste produced, reuse resources and recycle both at home and at work. Share these simple tips with friends, family and colleagues and do your part to raise awareness and take action during Waste Reduction Week:

  • Reduce:
    • Print responsibly by changing your default print settings to duplex and use HP Smart Web Printing at home and at work to save resources. When you print, use HP Office Recycled Paper.
    • Save energy by turning off your monitor, using stand-by settings on your printer, and turning off your computer at the end of the day. Track your progress through HP’s Power to Change widget.
  • Reuse:
    • Donate used computers, printers and other electronics to friends, family or your community.
    • Purchase durable products that can be repaired and reused.
  • Recycle:
    • Separate items for recycling to save money in disposal costs.
    • Use recycling services for end-of-life electronics, such as HP’s Planet Partners program to ensure products are recycled in a responsible and safe manner

HP’s environmental initiatives do not end with Waste Reduction Week. The HP Eco Solutions program continues to demonstrate HP’s innovation and industry leadership, with efforts in energy efficiency, resource conservation, digitally green alternatives and IT end-of-life solutions that span the full-range of HP’s products and services.
